Fire extinguishers

I love my old water extinguisher with the schrader valve. Always have it nearby at brushpile fires, if just to look safety minded. Just have to remember to empty it in the fall.

Always has been a hit too, when small kids are around. Or when a lady bends over in spandex pants! Just can't help myself even though you know you will be in for some scorn!

Nice, wish I could find a cheap source here. a 20lb ABC new was cheaper than a used 2.5 gallon water.

I had a 2.5 gallon and the tank cracked among other things, was never left to freezer either.

I have 3 of those water FE and one hand pump type....I like them. My 3 rechargeable ones have an air valve right on it to fill it with air. I hope to find a good location to mount one on the toolcat some day.

Decided to up the ante a bit with my on board fire protection. Hay fires and baler fires are a REAL serious issue. Have water extinguishers on the balers. Now the tractors...
I prefer the 2.5G Badger-type stainless water extinguishers, but they are pretty expensive. Was looking around on Ebay last weekend and found a guy out of MA that reconditions, tests them and sells them at a more affordable cost. He also sells the mounts cheap. They arrived in 2 days. Mounted 2 on tractors already, have a few more to go. I keep the ABC type in the cabs, too for electrical/oil fires.
Anyone else have other mounting locations, or ideas? Heres the outside mount I did on 1 of the 3 today. I don’t know if I will keep the decal. A little large, but makes it easier for my guys to find in an emergency.
Round bailer has on board fire supression built in. Tractors all have mounted ABC extinguishers in the cabs mounted at the floor level within easy reach. Trucks all have ABC as well, mounted on the tranny hump and the shop has 2 large ABC Ansuls mounted on the walls in accessible locations and the semi has one on the floor, next to the seat as per DOT regs.

Never had to use one but I'd rather be prepared. I think if I had a round bailer fire, I'd just pull the pin and drive off. The PTO shaft will separate and my hydraulic connections are all Pioneer release under pressure (breakaway) so it don't matter. Besides, the round bailer is insured against loss due to fire.

I do carry a non-contact IR digital thermometer and I 'shoot' the bearings on the bailers often. That is the biggest cause of round bailer fires, hung up roll bearings, that and excessive side sheet temps from holding dry hay bales in the bailer too long. The rotational friction of the bale can heat it to ignition if the RM is extremely low. I run the 'easy form' discs in the New Holland round bailers. Keeps the bale off the side sheets, lowers the horsepower requirements for a full bale as well. Good addition far as I'm concerned. They can drop the input horsepower appreciably because they greatly reduce side sheet friction.

I have emptied more than a few. Had a brush fire I drove up on and helped him put it out. Also had a mouse nest fire in an engine compartment a few years back.
I also keep them on my hay balers.
Most all the tire mud flings outside the FE.
Bet you have a fun time filling your haysaver tank...lol I have one as well but I fabbed a mount down low on the tongue of the bailer. Not that I use it. My customer prefers no proprionic acid on his hay so I don't use it. He dictates that and I comply. I have almost a full 55 gallon drum of it in the barn that I will probably never use. You want it, come and get it...lol

Far as mounting an extinguisher on the loader arm. I can see that becoming a liability. I use my tractors for other things other than farming, that would last maybe a day in the woods. I much prefer an ABC unit mounted close to the cab floor within easy reach.

Never seen on board fire supression on a round baler! Sounds spendy....

The Badger water extinguisher that came with my last baler doesnt have a schrader valve. IIRC, there was a small brass pressurizing valve that came with it and was lost probably in the first week I had the baler-10 years ago.
I like the scrader valve FEs much better.

Wasn't that spendy and I ordered it when I ordered the bailer. I think it was like a 500 buck option My NH uses a water filled pressurized extinguisher with a Schrader valve so I can pre charge it from the shop air and I drain it for winter layup so it don't freeze in the barn straight water is best for any hay bailer anyway.

Though I've never fiddled with it, I believe it uses a thermal link valve to release the pressurized water. Don't have a clue if it works as designed as it's (bailer) has never caught on fire.

The one thing I notice is the side sheets with the infeed discs stay a lot cooler when bailing. They keep the bale off the sheets when rolling. I know before I installed them (easy install) the side sheet temps during heavy use were hot enough that you didn't want to put your hand on them for any length of time. Now, they stay cool. I'd say the discs were the best investment I made other than the gathering wheels.

Trundle down to autozone and buy a screw down racing stem and replace the lost one. They have a rubber sealing washer inside that fits at the bottom of the flared out stem and another one that fits on the top with a threaded nut that holds it tight. I do that on all my wheels and can the crappy rubber stems. They are good for 125 psi. Rubber stems today are all made in China and we all know that China rubber is crap. You cannot do that with TPS monitors however. I just put the code reader on the vehicle and delete the TPMS feature and get rid of the idiot light.
