Just curious what you base this on? With all the federal programs and power company buy back I would think it would be a payback. Just my thinking, I don't have anything to base it on in Kentucky. The way he worded it almost sounds like if a group got together to do it, it may be for personal use anyway.

Just anecdotal evidence. I looked at the cost of solar panels on my house and $20K-$30K would be hard to recover in my lifetime.

You have to consider the financial programs that are offered that could pay quite a bit of the installation cost. As well as the power company buy back. I've looked at it too. I agree that it would be marginal on a single dwelling but if a group installed a large system and produced quite a bit more than was used it might be feasible.

I have them on my house. Was $18.5K, then I got 28% back on taxes.
Should be a 9-10 year ROI

The math is pretty easy, even with the increased lifespan of these panels now days, without government subsidies no one would try to mass produce electricity with solar. Highly inefficient, pretty high cost to get into, can be high monthly maint (cleaning dust/snow/ice/bird crap). Can you make pennies? Yes. Can you make dollars? Probably not.

I saw it happen to houses close to a huge solar commercial installation on 100 acres near Sault Ste Marie Ont. And I know I would be upset and worried about my property values, but upon a Google search of impact on rural property values I see numerous claims of no impact eg... How solar is impacting farmland values
