I just had about 700 ft of wire fence put in and the guy pounded all of his poles. 6" diameter, 8 ft long pounded to 5 ft. Solid as a rock when he was done. We used Tornado wire, nice stuff.

If you get frost in the ground where you live, you have to pound them in, otherwise they will pop right out the next spring. Even using concrete they will pop right out, and actually worse so because now the frost has something to grab hold of as it pushes upwards.

I do all my fencing in the spring of the year. I use a bulldozer, but a rented excavator will also pound them in.

I would use nothing but pressure treated posts and woven wire fence just because it is so cheap. It might take 3 days to put up 3000 feet, but what the heck, 30 years from now it is still up, and no having to maintain juice on those 3000 feet at all. What Pressure Treated wooden posts and woven wire costs...divided over 30 years, makes it the cheapest fence by a LONG shot.

I don't think you have given enough information to answer your question properly. What kind of posts are you putting in? Metal? wood? Round wood? what diameter? 4 X 6's? Each of those variables may have a different answer. I just put in about that much fence, I used metal "t" posts with an inexpensive gas powered pounder. Worked great. I used railroad ties for H-frames to pull barb wire against and used an auger on the back of my tractor to sink those. In our area, installing any fence in the spring is a lot easier than in the summer when the ground is dry and hard.
