I have a JD 1070 which is a younger and slightly larger relative of your JD. It is very important to use a counterweight on the back end of the tractor when lifting heavy loads with the front loader or forks. It reduces the load on the front axle and keeps stress off the front axle. I built a counterweight that is 750 - 1200 lb depending on if I hang suitcase weights on it. I use that or the backhoe. If neither is on the tractor, I avoid using 4WD when picking up something really heavy. If I have to move something really heavy, I plan ahead and do it with weight on the back end. The front axle is not designed to carry the load and the entire weight of the tractor if you raise the rear axle off the ground and try to move a load. Sorry to hear you broke the machine while learning. I was lucky while learning 25 years ago; nothing broke while I did it wrong. I'd look for a salvage tractor and try to buy the whole axle as a unit. The whole series of that tractor axle will likely fit - look at JD parts diagrams.

Thanx for come back ,failure as I see it is because overload on front axle. Rear axle came off of ground(too large load in bucket). All power transferred to front axle. That being said front axle under designed for loaders. Unit is a yanmar tractor under green paint. As far as repairs go will attempt it myself, have been mechanic most all of my life. Has anybody done the shimming of gears for engagement?

So the issue is NOT 4wd. It is no rear weight and overload enough to pick up the rear if the tractor.

Yes and no i am carrying 200lbs ballast in each tire along with titan weight box on 3 point with 350 lbs ballast weight in it. Looking backward 66 loader bucket is too large for tractor. My mistake is using 4wd on dry hard ground , iwas backing out when lost rear traction jd 790 frontend a weak link. Have used a massey the same way same conditions and had no problem. A lot of problem was my mistake.
