How about a tall glass of fresh milk the day after the cow had been grazing on bitterweeds

/ FARMERS*MILK #23
Now why would anyone want to drink a fresh glass of milk after the cow has been in that kind of feed. Thought that went straight over to the hog feeder:)

We have almost all Nubian goats in our goat dairy (except for 4 alpines). Their milk does have very high butterfat, and tastes much better than cows' milk. But it is actually healthier than cows milk also, it's more digestable because the fat globules are actually smaller, and it is naturally homogenized. It is also higher in several amino acids and vitamins.

Don't you know all that butter fat will kill you?

Yeah, I try to stay away from the butter fat. For instance, I had two pop-tarts and a coke for breakfast yesterday and I feel fine. :D

Mornin Rich,
Good to hear you back on TBN, you must have been busy on the farm this past summer, I havent seen any posts by you !

My grandpop raised a few jerseys and they had a higher butterfat content and he used to pour the cream over his blueberries for breakfeast along with his bacon and eggs and he made it into his nineties :) Of course he also worked from sunup to sundown thats what probablly killed him !

Howdy, Scotty!!

I've been pretty busy with the goat dairy. We're shipping milk, and expanding as fast as we can. It keeps me pretty busy!! We're also expanding our sheep operation and our egg business. That's why I'm only online this late, beleive it or not, I just got inside from finishing my day's farmwork.

I tried some goat's milk from a friend (La Mancha goats) and it was very good. I guess it isn't cost effective for this country to go to goats milk (even though it is better for you). I saw a quart of goat's milk at the market for $4. I'm going to try to see if I can start buying a gallon a week from my friend but I don't think they can spare that much since they are in the cheese making business and business is booming.

[ I guess it isn't cost effective for this country to go to goats milk ]

The reason that goats' milk isn't cost effective in this country, is because there aren't that many goat dairies. It's the law of supply and demand. Worldwide, more people drink goats' milk than cows' milk. In fact, worldwide, more people also drink sheep's milk than cows' milk. Worldwide milk consumption is: #1 goat's milk
#2 sheep's milk
#3 cow's milk
#4 water buffalo milk

Don't be surprised, you've probably consumed each of them if you like good cheese. Feta cheese is made with goat's milk. Romano cheese is made with sheep's milk. And REAL mozarella cheese is made with water buffalo milk.

I agree with Russ. My family also grew up on milk from the farm. Best milk we ever had and the money stayed with the farmer. Sorry I don't have a nearby farm around me.

One must also remember that much of the worlds population is Lactose intolerant.

Egon, I'm interested in this statement. Where did you find this? I'm not questioning it (well, OK, I am  ), but am interested because I had not heard this before.

PCRM-Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine

"Lactose intolerance is caused by the loss of the enzymes that digest the milk sugar lactose, a normal process that occurs after the age of weaning. For those who are lactose intolerant, drinking milk can result in abdominal pain, diarrhea, and other painful gastrointestinal symptoms. Approximately 75 percent of the world’s population—including 60 to 80 percent of African-Americans, 50 to 80 percent of Latinos, and at least 90 percent of Asian-Americans and Native Americans—is lactose intolerant."

Egon,

Are you saying that only cows milk has lactose? I'm lactose intolerant so I have to takes pills when eating milk products. In my 20's I started getting sick and it took awhile to figure out it was milk related. Looks like my oldest daughter has it already. The pills work. If goat milk does not have lactose I might try it with her. Don't know if I or she will drink it though..... :D

Dan

Dan, I had the same thought before we got our Nubian. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the goat milk tastes better than store-bought cow milk. It is a little like whole milk (somewhat thicker than 1% or 2%) but sweeter. Very good. Once you pour it into a glass you won't know the difference. :)

Good luck.

Billy,

Interesting link. Human milk has more lactose than milk from cows and goats. I guess loctose intolerance is a way to get the babu off the bottle so to speak.

Reading the link kinda makes me think that the goats milk won't help my daughter or me. I used to drink a gallon of milk in one or two days. I have not had any milk to speak off in decades. Too many Pavlovian learning episodes that sent me running to the bathroom.:D

We eat a lot of cheese but I and now my daughter have to take the enzyme pills before we chow down.

Later,
Dan
