Well took the Frankenstein out for a walk.
I found 3 things I don't like about it
1 The PTO does not have a remote control lever.
2 Tires are too close the mowing deck.
3 The forward and reverse lever is backwards to me.
so I plan to change all of that.
other wise I am Happy with the way it runs.

Thank a lot for all the Interest.

Bruce, there are plans and pictures of changing the operation of the old style F/R lever to be like the Comm 10 at the yahoo group, L Forward Reverse Lever Conversion:

That mower deck is a more modern "snorkle" deck that is supposed to hold stuff in and cut it up more than the older decks. The older ones have a near vertical rear edge that isn't as close to the tires. Swap out decks and that issue is solved.

Thanks for the suggestion on what to pay for a nonrunning L8.

I love the 2nd photo. It looks like it came out of sales brochure with the tractor nestled next to the picturesque small garden. Very sharp looking tractor. Nice work!

Thanks 2
I need that deck to use in a trailer park.
I have the right gear head but need the reprofit kit for it.
I have a pair or 16" Dia wheels I plan to try them first.
I got the forward reverse changed out to day.
Working on PTO remote shifter.

Did you use a part from a Comm 10 or something for the F/R lever? Pictures?:)

You've done a great job on that machine. I am still looking for one...

Seems like the gearshaft on the snorkle deck is longer than the older 30" brush hog deck. Did that shaft come with the deck or was it taken off an older deck and installed on the snorkle deck?

Well I have been with out power for 4 days
Got me behind maybe I will get some more time later to play.
The gear head is a 106.
I have the other gear head but not the retrol fit kit
I am trying to fine some one to give me one
Then I can put the right gear head on.
I did it for the fun of it
I put it on just to see if it would work??
I have a set of 16 '' wheels I am going to try next.
There is not enough room between the tires and the shell
The 16 should give another 1/2 inch?:confused2:

I happened to have a part.
Gravely made to flip the forward reverse.
So I used it I will try to take a picture of one
You push at the top and pull at the bottom.
So now when you push the lever the tractor goes forward.
pull back and the tractor backs up.
I am used to that way.

You know, as soon as I find that old L to repower, the first thing I am going to do is change that lever so it is the same as my Comm 10. I know I will get confused and it may be a hazard to health and property. I only play the guitar in one direction and on the Gravely, push forward for forward and pull back for reverse seems very obvious.

Of course, if I find a 500 or 5000 series walk behind basket case, then that problem will be solved.

A rod and handle would work great .
as a matter of fact either side lever would work
Maybe need a longer rod.
I used a bracket Gravely had made years ago.
I doubt if they are available now.

You put a frowny face next to using two spacers. I see absolutely nothing wrong with this. Yeah, one piece would be better but so what if its two? It'll work just fine.

Are you going to make the top hat for the L any longer than the one in the picture? Based on my experience I think longer is better because the load of the planetary is spread over a larger area. Of course I've been wrong many times before!

Well I finely got my figuring done .
I had forgotten about the thickness of the Kohler
So now I can make it from one 2.00 thick aluminum plate.
Instead of two at $100.00 would be $200.00
That saves $100.00 so that is money in the pocket.
So final set up is like this.
Kohler adapter drilled to fit the Model C & Model L transmission.
I can drill their adapter for $5.00 or sell one drilled for $60.00.
The muffler does not need any work except take the cover off.
The cover could be notched for the handle bar
The gear and top hat are $170.00 together.
The seal went up to $8.00
And of course shipping is about $15.00
I made two braces from 1/4 X 1 wide Twisted 1/2 turn.
It makes it a lot stronger Twisted.
For the back I took a draw bar from a 5xxx series tractor
Bolted it right to the bottom of the engine.
Made a cross from piece of angle iron
It is a LI set the speed max at 2600
I like the way it handles
I am taking it up to Somerset Pa. to the swap meet.
Hope to see you guys there.
Thanks Bruce g

I had fun too. Bruce - refresh my memory - what is the correct pressure angle for the Gravely spur gear?
