Yes, a watt is a watt.. but electric motors are getting more and more efficient as time passes.  That equates to less engine load.
While I'm sure that some of the advances inmotor technology will make it back to the 12v side, as with anything. technology is 'moving forward', and the newer systems are getting the most R&R dollars.
The efficience I speak of is not only on the motor side.. but also on the power generation side. Alternators of today are more efficent than when they first appeared... same with the new lines of equipment being designed today, for future useage.
