Is this annoying anybody else? It bugs the he** out of me!

First it was the rolling Google ads, now the ebay ads. I understand a need to raise revenue to keep this site free, but are these ads disrupting everyone at TBN to support the other ByNet sites? Quite annoying.

Sorry if it's annoying... we're going to run the ads as a test for a while, and if they work, we have plans to incorporate targeted eBay auction results to most of the forums.

I personally thought they would be among the most useful, relevant ads we run. Many websites run completely unrelated, generic ads that have no conceivable value to visitors. Our ads on the other hand, are almost always related and of course, support the operations of the site.

Since the other BNN sites have low traffic, the server costs are fairly small compared to those of TBN... plus, those sites support themselves with similar ads.

The ads are fine, just put them somewhere else!

Putting the ads on the right hand side reduces the horizontal width of the forums and/or generates horizontal scroll bars.

PITA /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I agree that it creates horizontal scroll bars, but how is this a problem? On the screen resolution I use, the only thing on the right side of the screen are the eBay ads, i.e., to select threads to read I don't have to scroll to the right.

And I don't even know what you guys are talking about because I've never seen any ads on the right side of the page. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Maybe my Norton SystemWorks or Personal Firewall is blocking them????

/ Ebay Ads on right side? #7
I'm not seeing them either Bird, but I haven't checked from home for a couple of days /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I don't see a thing either. I've tried it from Home/Work -- Internet Explorer/Mozilla -- nothin'

I didn't even notice them till I read this post. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Hey, I finally found them. I clicked on a specific forum category (which I VERY SELDOM use), and that's where they are.

Seeing that the only way I view TBN is via the Posts over the Past 12 hours, I never see them. So, if someone doesn't like the eBay ads, don't delve into specific forums, which slows down finding of posts to read anyway.

Yup Dave, that's where they are all right. I never use that method viewing either.

The ads themselves were kind of cool. Yet another way to be distracted from the realities of life /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I didn't see them either. I just look at 6, 12, or 24 hours when on TBN. I kind of like it. Only the people that are stuck in one forum have to look at them. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Hope Muhammad is not going to change it. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Unfortunate. I think I understand why your doing it, but I'll have to adjust my views to opt out of seeing them.

I come to TBN for info and community spirit, not to be sold or told of sales.

Thanks for listening.

Muhammad,

Have you considered a subscription option for anyone that would like to opt out of all the ads.

I understand the need for the ads and to make a living but it would be worth it to me to subscribe to the site with the adds removed. Maybe you could also include some "premium" features for subscribers. Maybe some special views with only responses to threads a user has posted in. Or a view with just new threads not posts. That way I could ignore all the other threads that I have looked at and didn't interest me personally.

I know there are options for favorite threads, post in last X hours, etc. but for me these are all a little bit clunky. A custom view just the way I like it would be cool.

Thanks,
Kevin

I must say, they don't bother me at all. Didn't notice until it was pointed out in this thread. I have no trouble ignoring ads like this, and sometimes I read them and follow the links. But then, I also get woodworking magazines almost as much for the ads as for the written content.

Like I said, we're testing it. The eBay ads will probably be integrated in a different fashion. But it's going to run for a few days anyway.

Thanks for the responce, I was just venting a little!
I just did not like everything bunched up as mentioned in other reply's as well.

I think you do a fine job with the site, and thank you for keeping it going as well as you do.

We were just poking a little fun at the ads. They really don't matter to us one way or another.

Kennyd the gloves are yours for free but you'll have to come pick them up personally. Do you know where I live, naw I didn't think so. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
