We are in the process of doing a makeover on the horse barn. At present the floor of the barn and stalls is very dark sand which produces a black covering over everything. I figure this has to be cured before even attempting to revamp anything else. I do not want to go the route of cement and wish to maintain expenses within reason. Does anyone have a suggestion for a low dust, low maintenance material for this type of application?

Daughter and SIL had a problem like that with their new property. The dirt floors in the barn and leanto produced a tremendous amount of dust. It was very irritated and that fine dust just hung in the air. Bad for humans and horses. Anyway they bought rubber mats and laid them down on top of the dirt. I do not know the cost of these mats but it is working well. They can also be moved if need be.

Good luck.

Yeah, my intent was to go to mats in the stalls, but had not considered them for the runway. I guess it would probably as cost efficient as a pea gravel material. With all of the construction and fuel costs, it is hard to get any kind gravel material around here.

How about stone dust? Ive used this before and it worked out well on a drive. It was put down, compressed then wet down well. The outcome was more like concrete and it didnt give off much dust to speak of (loose gravel was much worse). If that doesnt sound good I know theres a material used in riding rings thats a mix of sand, a rubber material and other stuff (not sure what it is). My daughter worked at a horse farm which had an indoor ring w/ this stuff in it and I believe the maker is in NJ. Its sort of hard to describe but its certainly NOT dusty. It does need to be dressed up after a lot of use but it took considerable traffic to get it to that point.

ETA: I think this might be the place that did the floor at the farm I mentioned above. PermaLife: Manufacturer of Rubber Mulch, Playground Surface and Sportsfield Products

Around here they spray all the roads with calcium chloride for dust control. It works beautifully.
