I'm planning to order some stone (gravel) to top off my gravel driveway. Is 3/8 inch stone the best material to use? what about 1/2 inch? I assume I want stone and not gravel...correct? Thanks

We used 5/8ths minus both times we resurfaced the driveway - all 600 ft. of it. This compacts down pretty well.

Actually the 1/2" is a litlle small. 5/8 or 3/4" is better as it leaves a slightly bigger gap in between the stones. As TD said in his post he uses 5/8" (minus) the minus meaning it has a fairly high percentage of fines (sand and silt). The fines are very important as they fill the voids between the stones allowing it all to lock together when compacted. Most crusher operations produce a lot of 5/8 minus as it is the main specced material used in asphalt production. So you may be able to get a good price on it. other good product per price materials to inquire about are Asphalt reject material. This is material produced that didn't quite meet state or county specs, or came from a pile that had seperation do to to setting and sluffing to long. There is also a material called RAP (recycled asphalt product), where old asphalt is broken up and re-run through the crusher again. This is a nice product because it already has a black color to it from the old asphalt oil. All of the above materials are very nice for driveway construction/maintenance as they compact well and are more erosion reistant.

Thank you for the replies. I will look into the materials mentioned.

As Kodiak alludes to, make sure you are getting
"crushed" stone. Anything else moves around forever.

The recycled ashpalt that Russ mentions does indeed really work well since it tends to bond (especially in the summer) and stay put rather well. The only thing you need to watch for is some of the larger chunks that may have not been crushed. Other than that the recycled ashpalt is great.

My story.......My 6 years old driveway is about 350 feet long with a rather large parking area at the barn. I started with large (I believe #2) and gradually worked down to what they call 5-7 here in northern Ky. I now have a pretty good base. It was suggested to me that i go to #8's for appearence. I did and now when I smooth out the drive with my box scraper I have mixed the different sizes all up. I would like it much better if all exposed rock was a uniform size. Good luck.
