drill bit sharpener

anyone use them.. either jig style or the self contained motor units.

I have accumulated a box of old hss bits over the years that are too dull to use.. though might be saved and at least use them on wood or cast iron ??

i have the drill doctor 750x unit...and i swear by it.

been using it for several years. its easy to use and can sharpen from 3/32 to 3/4" with ease. i paid about $100 on craigslist for the thing

Have one of the very first drill doctors, and its saved me its cost 2-3x over, by being able to quickly and easily resharpen larger bits.

Takes a few times to get the hang of it, but once you do its nearly idiot proof.

I've been shown how to resharpen on a grinding wheel but never could get the hang of it, and had a hard time keeping the angles between the two side of the bits uniform. The DD holds the bit in a jig and makes it just about impossible to get two different angles.

I use the old style drill bit jig and a grinder. Cost around $15 at Sears and works on most bits, but you do have to get a fine grinding wheel if you don't already have one. I can also use the fine grinder wheel for touching up other tools.

One more vote for the Drill Dr.
I always turn bits into garbage with the jig and grinder. Drill Dr. is fast.

If you are real serious about a drill sharpener you might check out Darex. They are professional units. They are qlty and spendy.

I have an older model M and it was about $800 more than a decade ago. Today's low end model is selling for about $1500.

There are a couple of these older models on ebay and asking price is $400.

They are not for everyone but are hard to top for the serious user.

One of the big benefits of having a drill sharpener is the freebee old bits that guys give you cuz they're too lazy to sharpen their own.....

Now, way back a long time ago, I had a friend who happens to be a VERY good machinist to teach me the proper way to sharpen drill bits with a bench grinder. It takes all of about 30 seconds to make the worst broken bit cut like a new one. So...If someone GAVE me a "drill dr", I MIGHT use it. Otherwise, it's "old school" for me until my days are done.

I do this with larger bits but the eyes ain't what they used to be. Soooo.....another vote for the drill dr. got one, love it.

I too felt pretty good about hand holding bits and getting a pretty good sharpening. Sometimes had to repeat the process to get a bit to bite and spill out good shavings. (I'd often find myself in someones shop needing a drill bit to find all of them with corners broken off or so dull they couldn't be pushed through thin steel even with a drill press. A quick pass or two or four on a grinding wheel brought them back to useable bits).

Also had a jig that was set up on a good grinding wheel. Hand sharpening was quicker and better angles.

Then I bought the Drill Dr. Hands down, as others here have learned, better sharpen on bits. Under 3/16" I just buy new. Have a new wheel but have yet to use it.
Now I have sharp drill bits in every corner of the house, shop, garage and property. :drink:

I use to be a bend grinder type sharpener but I broke down and got the 750x and now only use the bench grinder to reshape broken bits and to do the ones larger than 3/4". I will say this, if you've overheated the bit it'll never hold a sharp edge, kind of like a chain saw chain. Also I haven't had great luck sharpening small bits but those are the ones that I always seam to have an endless supply of.

Same here, when I was about 12yrs old a helping a farmer/machinest he had me sharpen a 5 gal buck full of bits and wouldnt pay unless they worked good and I had to try every one on a test hole after 3rd or 4th day I got real good at it. Ever since It takes me about 15 or 20 seconds to get them right on the bench grinder if it has a good wheel on it.

Its one of those things if you get the hang of it its easy if not the drill dr is the way to go.
