Any of you guys have ideas to help with hip displacia? My Great Pyrenees has been limping lately, thought it was something wrong with a foot, then realized he was licking his hip.

Went through this with a German Shepherd 40 years ago and unless something has changed, there is no cure. Hope y'all have ideas to releave the pain and help him stay with us for a while.

Unfortunately there is no cure, all that you can do is manage the pain and try to keep him from overexerting. There are some good pain meds, which can make life more comfortable.

A other issue I have with my lab is her eating habits, I pretty much gave up on it and we bought a slow feeder dog bowls.

Yes. It's amazing how quickly they can scoff a cup of food down, and can cause serious problems. I sometimes put an equal amount of water in which slows him down.

Be sure you know about the breed. Set your expectations accordingly.

We have had a handful of GSDs over the years. GSDs learn quickly and love to please. They also like to 'correct' their mates who don't follow the rules.

Now we have a couple of Kangal/Anatolian Shepherds. They aren't quite as smart and are about 50% bigger than the GSD. Like the Pyrenees, they are guard dogs. They bark at people outside of the property to warn them away. They don't bother guests other than seeking attention and weighing 100+. Another key about this breed is they have high pain tolerance and obey when they feel like it. GSD always wants to obey.

Early training of the basics allow you to get some control.

Shock collars are for when they are out on the property. Tone. Vibrate. Shock. All variable. Rarely get to shock. Mostly wife did it because they like to paw at the doors to come in. Like someone said. The dogs consider you part of their pack. If you aren't dominant, you're submissive.

Our 13 year old white GSD has had Degenerative Myelopathy for almost 3 years. He's always covered a lot of miles and we thought a year ago that he would need to be put down soon but he needs a little help to get up in the morning and is then good for the rest of the day. His days of watching the horses and then barking at them when they get too close to the fence are numbered. He still goes to the creek and is able to get back out. Maybe it's good therapy because I have been told he has survived longer than most dogs do after showing signs of Myelopathy.

Our GSD has arthritis in her hip from hip displacia.

She's been on the Librela shot for about 3 years now. Once a month I take her to the vets for her shot.

Ahe's been doing really good on it.

I need some training tips on how to get the dogs to NOT BARK whenever anything or any body comes to the door. I find the greeting very annoying. IT"S ME guys, no need to get your hackles up and make so much noise.

Yelling at them doesn't seem to help ;-)

I just had a discusdion with a coworker about this. When you yell at them they think you are joining in. He started telling his Chesapeake "it's OK" in a soothing voice, and the pup is starting to quiet down.

We have a 'settle' command that works the same way.
