If pup, Charlie, has three more days, like this one today, we will have to put him down. Its a hard choice. Dogs give you everything they can. Till they can't. If you gave them a good life, there are no regrets.

Feel for you, my old guy is pushing 13 and as a giant he is past life expectancy. He is all there mentally but the body is used up (I can commiserate), needs help on steps and getting on stuff. Falls when he is not concentrating. Can't run, rear legs give out and he drags himself to get to the trouble spot. He forgets he can't just jump a ditch then can't get out. The creek has become a danger zone. He is slowly learning his limitations and will bark to get help when needed. I hope he follows his mate and die peacefully when it is time, I'd hate to put him down. It falls to me, he has not been in vehicle in over ten years nor been to a vet (an hour drive one way) ever. We give all the shots needed.
Sadly there are 2 more not far behind, but the next couple of LDG are here, one set ready the other at 9 months a work in progress.

My last mutts reached that point also. From hyper active terriers to seniors that couldn't adjust to their limitations.
The last 4 where from the same litter and all went within a year.
I took them outback one by one as the time came.
We had a nice visit. I thanked them for their contribution to my life.
I had a funeral pyre ready. Wrapped in their favorite blankets I placed them on top, lit the base and walked away.
No upsetting final visit to the Vet, I tried to make it as easy as possible.
To this day I love a visit with a dog but I can't bring myself to get another.
Their pictures are still on the fridge.

To this day I love a visit with a dog but I can't bring myself to get another.

Mr Massey, never say never. I thought I'd never have another dog. Didn't want one.
Last dog I had, came down with age related health issues. Sad time in my life as she
was a great dog.
Almost 15 years later.....we got another dog. Just happened. Another GSD and she has
been a blessing to my wife and me. Now? We sit out and watch the stars with the dog.
In addition to the farm work I do, the dog requires and gets exercise, both from me and for me (lol).
Crazy excited whenever we come home. Always a perfect greeting. Sorry I/we waited so
long to feel that 100% unconditional puppy love.
Take time to let your heart heal, I get that. But don't wait 15 years like I did. That's
time lost I can't get back.

Shelter dog returned to shelter after 9 months because of alleged food conflict with the adopter's cat. Now she is really at risk from the shelter.

She has been returned by 3 different adopters. The shelter appears to be at capacity for dogs. When the next batch of dogs arrives, she is likely to be one that will be euthanized to make room for the others.
