Does your vet keep you waiting?

There are good Vets and there are great Vets. Bad ones specialize, in my opinion. I take my animals cats, horses and cows to a great vet. All appointments. An emergency is a different story. Everyone that is waiting while the emergency is being resolved should be thankful it's not their pets or livelyhood on the line. "Anything can happen to anyone at anytime." Be patient you could be the one with the emergency.
Recently we had the last scheduled appointment of the day for "Floating" a horses teeth. The horse needed more anesthesia than normal before the proceedure ended. The horse cannot be left unattended. In this case the appointment went over by thirty-minutes. People dropping in hoping to get their animals seen since it was still "Office Hours". Asked to wait and they would be seen. One person I heard, left saying he would never come back.
I will take my animals there everytime.

If we have made a appointment for a small animal, we get in within 15 minutes. Most clinics around here have 2-3 vets in and out of the office at any given time. Ken Sweet

The one we changed to today has 4.

I have a real small town vet that does house calls on Thursday but I can get a appointment next day or sooner if needed.

What do you do when such a situation occurs, and does it happen to you very often?

Never happened to me with a vet. but Doctors are different story. I give them 60 minutes past appointment time then walk out, never return.

I have had the same primary care MD for over 11 years and she is a GEM...has never kept me waiting past my scheduled appt time in over 40 visits. Tell you guys a joke...I have never had a woman primary care MD before her, was telling a co worker before my first appt with the MD that I was somewhat uncomfortable having a woman MD giving me a checkup, inclusive of a prostate exam, the guy told me, "Oh, don't worry because you won't be the first a**hole she has seen...."

1) Small animal vet...depends on time of day. The later in the day, the more likely a wait.

2) Horse vet...she comes when she can, brings the right horse in, examines, turns out, and leaves meds/notes/bills. Usually never see her.

3) I get all my healthcare at the VA. Large notices all over: "If you've been waiting more than 15 minutes, please notify the receptionist.". Last year I had pneumonia. Saw the doctor, got a chest x-ray, had it read, meds prescribed, script filled, and out of there in under 2 hours.

I envy you guys that can eschew either a Vet or an MD (or both) because of a late appointment. If I had done that, I would have run out of doctors and vets in driving distance in pretty short order. Our county currently has a total of 2 vets at one clinic. The surrounding counties are very similar. It's about an hour drive until you reach an area that has multiple vets. As far as doctors go, it's a little better in total number, however I learned a little while back when I was trying to schedule an appointment that a couple of them are no longer accepting new patients. So in my case, unless I'm willing to drive an hour or more (one way), I'm better off waiting.

Having said all that, I'll say that the Vet that I take my critters to is as timely as I could expect anyone to be - plus the clinic is only a 1/2 mile up the road. My family doctor is okay, I would guess an average wait beyond your appointment time is about 30 minutes. However, I know that they make it a point to keep a 10:00 and a 2:30 appointment open each day to squeeze in urgent cases, and do their best effort to get others in during peak seasons.

Good luck and take care.

I never had to wait more than 15 min for vet but he is a neighbor. Last visit we got to talking about fishing and the receptionist came in and rescued me :)

Many times an emergency may have happened to someones pet and a life and death situation occurs. Thank God it isn't your pet and that you have a vet willing to help others in emergencies. We had a Yorkie nearly bitten in half. It was quickly operated on for over 4 hours and eventually recovered completely. We were devastated and apologized to the people waiting in the waiting room. All of them said no trouble and hope your little dog makes it. I had another vet all booked up on a Saturday when another of my dogs had a torn dew claw. The vet said come back on Monday...I have never went back nor will I.
