I have been fighting a starting issue with my DK 55. It does not matter if the engine is hot or cold, I have to crank it for a long time. I was wondering if the lift pump is weak or the check valves are leaking by. Does anyone know if there is a check valve in the fuel tank at the pickup point.

I am not aware of any check valves. Could be a partially clogged line coming from the tank.

The tractor runs fine once started. That would eliminate any fuel restriction. I was wondering if the fuel is running out of the supply line when the tractor is not running. A weak pump would still supply fuel when the engine is running because of the pumping rate. Once shut down, if a check valve is leaking by would drain the supply line until you crank for a while.
