Hey guys just wanting to get some pros and cons about both types of hook-ups on discbines. Most of my ground is uneven with hills. They vary in size about 50/50 on being wide vs narrower turns. I know most of the other farmers around here have the regular hitch type hook-up style. Most everyone mows with a Kuhn or JD moco as well. What is your opinions on the 2pt style vs the hitch?

i would just get the drawbar hitch.

2 point is more of a pain to hookup, but from what I see of the neighbor who has one, it turns tighter and eliminates driveline chatter on tight turns.

If the drawbar styles you are looking at require a CV style PTO shaft, I'd strongly consider a two point hookup. Some drawbar styles incorporate a swivel hitch and use a standard cardan style PTO. This type may be preferable to the two point type if you are hooking and unhooking a lot. CV style PTO's serve a definite purpose, but if they can be avoided, so much the better.

What about the draw bar hitches like the Kuhn fc type that has the gyrodyne system? Will those still take some pretty tight turns without much driveline chatter?

The 2 point hitch mowers I have seen all have wither a hydraulic or gyrodyne system, so a drawbar type mower with the same system shouldn't have any problems with tight turns.

Exactly. You can turn until the tractor's rear wheel rubs the mower hitch beam and the driveline angles don't change appreciably, or chatter at all.

Your's doesn't have the gyrodine hitch. With a gyrodine hitch the pto shaft stays straight all the time. W e bought a Kuhn 3150 last year with the drawbar hookup & the gyrodine hitch & when turning there is no noise at all from the shaft when turning.

What model and hitch type?

JD 1470 pulls from drawbar.

It does have a special part that attaches to my drawbar to extend the distance of the PTO shaft, it says is supposed to get rid of chatter completely cause it will make the joints at even angles and distance.

Do you have the tractor drawbar set at the correct length(540 rpm-14" or 1000 rpm -16")?? Are the 2 u-joints on the telescoping shafts in correct phase? Wear in the sliding drive shafts can let u-joints get out of phase(time) enough to chatter.

You apparently didn't understand my descripton of swivel hitch. You have an equal angle hitch, and it seems to be one that has some shortcoming, either in setup or condition.

Yes,your's has the equal angle hitch. I had two 1460 john deere mowers years ago with that hitch.

I have a Kuhn and I opted for the 2 pt hitch. I love it almost all the time, the one time I don't like so much is when hitching up - it's a pain! But once done it pulls very nicely, turning at close to 90 degrees with absolutely no driveline clatter is an experience I never had on the old haybines. Your hitch arms do need to be able to lock firmly in place to prevent side to side sway on uneven ground though. The NH I run the discbine on has pins to lock the arms in a set of hole - chains would work better for this as they could be tightened snuggly.

So if I was going to hook the discbine to a dedicated tractor for the entire mowing season, it would be a 2 pt hitch hands down. Since my NH has to do the mowing and the baling I do a lot of hitching/unhitching of the discbine. I do curse it a little bit then. :)

Yeah that would definitely he an issue for me as we only run 3 tractors here so we do a lot of hitching and unhitching. I hear the drawbar hookups with the gyro system does really well also, maybe not quiet as well as the 2pt but a lot better than the older systems.

There's a Kuhn FC 243 RTG here on the farm. My wife and son picked it up used for a song with less than 200 acres on it. It has the 2 pt. hitch with the Gyrodine system. You can turn it back on itself, more than 90˚, and there's no drivetrain noise at all. It's not hard to hook because the hitch arms swing and twist side to side. It's the easiest hook up 3 point hitch implement I've ever seen. Getting the chains set up right the first time takes longer than anything.
