Backhoe Digging stumps

   / Digging stumps #21
When exactly was the last time you used that method? did you get it at Home Depot?...was this before or after the Patriot Act ?

When I was helping to put a road into a an old rifle range in the 1970s we had a very stubborn stump and no backhoe or tractor available. We had already dug and cut as much as we could but couldn't reach the tap root. Snapped a chain attached to my Jeep when we tryed to pull it, so the next logical step (to the minds of 20-somethings) was a pound of black powder under the stump. The stump landed about 50 yards downrange...

We were young and indestructable (in our own minds). Sort of shudder when I think back on that!

We don't always have the option of cutting 'em off high (-:
A neighbor calls, "I just dropped this tree and was wondering if you could.......", etc.
I have learned to ask what species and size before the conversation gets too far.
If it was a Cherry tree I suggest they find someone with a stump grinder, go 6 inches or so below grade, mix some dirt with the chips and rake it over - done, no hole to fill.
IOW; beware neighbors with tap roots.

To SOME extent it is like riding a bike; We can tell you how, just put your feet on the pedals, keep you balance, don't actually STEER with the bars, etc., but you will have to develop the feel for it yourself.
I generally don't try to pull a stump over or out until it has rotated in the hole as I pull tangentially at the roots.
