The mileage gains are from advancing the injection events back to where they should be but this does raise NOX emissions some. Eliminating EGR improves combustion efficiency as the engine is not choking on it's own pharts. Thermal efficiency gains too as elimination of EGR reduces combustion chamber temperature prior to the injection events. Of course wasting fuel by setting fire to the particulate filter is obvious enough.
Have to worry what the new age thinkers , agenda 21 lovers at the EPA will come up with in the new tier V emissions. Did anybody think they were going to stop at tier IV ?
