I have this Hitachi 7" G18SS and well.... Lance say it better that I am Hitachi 7" Angle Grinder Review (Model G18SS) - YouTube

I was cutting a few angle the other day and a friend of mine brought his 4 1/2" with some cut off wheels. I don't feel like putting a 7" cut off on mine so. What about those metal cutting steel disks like this one Irwin Industrial Tools 4935560 7-1/4-Inch 68-Tooth Metal Cutting Circular Saw Blade for Thin Steel - Amazon.com

some come with ether a 7/8 or a 20mm arbor but amazon sells adapters to make a 5/8 to ether of those

Can you cut with one of those on an angle grinder?

I would buy a 4.5" grinder and use the 4.5 cut off wheels...JMO...

search TBN...there is a good long thread on "what 4.5 grinder would be best..."

Just my $.02, I have the heavy duty dewalt 7 and 9" grinder. I would not want to have a cutting wheel on that, with the power it has you have to be right on top of what is going on all the time. It would be bad to slip and have it grab your shirt or coveralls but I cannot imagine the damage a cutting blade could do on that grinder it you slipped and it ran into your leg or abdomen.

I have an old (28 yr) black + decker 7 inch industrial angle grinder. It's powerful- squeeze the trigger and the torque grabs your hand if you are not ready for it. I do everything with it - grind, cut off, etc. Definitely 2 hand operation.

Sounds like a "Best" Craftsman grind I used to have. I needed a seven inch grinder and fast so I grabbed Sears best, three horsepower or some such. Darn thing would almost twist out of your hands when you squeezed the trigger. Then at the Bosch store they had a $300.00 plus seven inch grinder on sale for half price and I bought it.

The Bosch had almost no torque twist but you couldn't stop the blade no matter how hard you stuffed it into a piece of steel. The Craftsman on the other hand had huge torque twist but you could stop the blade by stuffing it into a piece of steel. I have two of those Bosch now, also a Milwaukee. When I'm using different wheels for different projects I will change grinders instead of wheels, lazy like that.

You have to be careful with power tools. But I carry pipeliner cut off wheels for the big grinders because sometimes nothing works better. A case in point is when you want to flush cut a post or upright in concrete and a torch would be difficult to get into the location.

I have 4.5", 7", 9" angle grinders and 3" cut off straight end grinders + a cutting torch. Each has its place for cutting & grinding. Using the right tool lessens the possibility of getting hurt with it.

I have had those cut off wheels come apart. I pulled 1\5 out of my thigh and found the rest 50' away.
I would not use one any thinner than necessary and go slow and steady. By all means use protective eyewear and keep the guard where it will do the most good.
It's an effective, efficient cutting tool but pretty dangerous.

...those cut off wheels come apart...

IMO...this is a good thing...if you bind the wheel (the thicker the piece being cut the easier it is to bind)...beyond the critical point the composite wheel (breaking up) absorbs a lot of the energy and eliminates a lot of the kick back where a solid blade could cause much worse injuries...

I have a 6" metabo and it's main purpose is cutting with a cutting wheel. Definitely need 2 hands not just for safety but to keep a somewhat steady cut. It works great I think. Grinding is usually reserved for one of the 4.5" grinders. I think I may get a 9" next and would not hesitate to put a cutting disc on it.

Especially on a 7" or 9" grinder, you want a guard installed when using a cutting disc. 7" used to be the only grinders available. A 5 or 6" is a lot easier to handle and control.

Cut off wheels are great. I worked for one co that would write you up for running grinding, wire, tiger discs or cutting wheels other than metabo on a metabo. They were also pretty strict about guards too. I like to pull all guards off my grinders so my wheels won't have flat spots.

"I like to pull all guards off my grinders so my wheels won't have flat spots."

What does this statement mean?

I've seen a lot of guys put a 7" disc on a 5" grinder and come very close to cutting their finger off holding the side handle. Even on a 7" grinder, it wouldn't be hard to do.

It was an attempt at humor. Wire wheels cut and buff better if you flip them ever so often. Guard will not allow it.

Would you like to see pictures of a co-workers hand that thought pulling the guards off a grinder was a good ideal too. Plenty of blood and gore since you seem to be into that sort of thing.
