Just curious has anybody done this? At 60 inch cut would be the same as a 5' hog, previous pasture land no real obstacles, just don't have the funds right now for a tractor purchase, were saving for down to build the house? Thanks

so long as the ground is mostly smooth, no humps and bumps that will catch the mower deck, you should be fine. (watch out for them as a lot of pastures i know of have some bad bumps.) i have actually mowed parts of my horse pastures with a riding lawn mower. you might need to go a little slower then if you had a 5 ft bush hog as mowing grass shorter will take a bit more time to minimize some bumps. too fast could start bouncing and scalping depending on how yourr pull behind is set up and how close you cut it.

i asusme you are pulling this with an atv or rider mower?

just keep in mind it will not last as long as a tractor and mower.. IE.. finish cutting 10ac with the rider and trial mower will be a real workout... and a bit slow.

do you already have the trail mower and rider? if not, what is your budget?

reason I ask, is you can sometimes find a running antique with mower in the 1500-2500$ range... if you are spending 800$ on a rider and 800-1000 on a pull behind.. then you could get an old ford and 5' mower... maybee even cheaper..

just kicking out ideas.

Also the pull behinds are slow and do not give as good as a cut as tractor models. I mow a field every year because the guy says he gets a better cut than his trailed mower and he already owns it. He does do a few paths on his own. I have an old Ford N, available around here for a couple thousand with a bushhog, and it does a real good job and is useful for other tasks as well.

Also think about renting a tractor and cutter, mow it with it and keep up with it, with the trail mower. a cheaper alt.

I mow 10 acres with a 5' rotary cutter and it takes forever. It was fun when I first started doing it, but after the 2nd time I was wishing for a larger cutter.

Renting a tractor and cutter would be your best bet.

I just got a flyer from DR. They make a pull behind rough cut mower. Only problem is is 44" wide.

problem with renting is it is inconvienient, either have to pay transport or transport yourself.. then you are pressed into a time frame to get it back due to renteal per day fee's adn if something comes up you either can't finish or must pay more to keep it.

after a few rentals.. he could buy a ford and 5' mower and be done with it.. probably for 2x what he's have in a trail mower.. he could get a good running tractor and mower that will cut whatever he needs.. and could sell it in a few years to upgrade, if needed, and not loose anything...
