Oh absolutely without a doubt buy from a dealer over big box. As far as I know big box or dealers have to charge the same price for the 1000 series. The big issue is; If you have an issue while under warranty dealers will service only units sold by them first, everybody else is thrown to the back of the line.

I just went ahead and bought the 1046 and I am very glad of it. The V-twin
Briggs has a good sound and the hydrostatic is good to have. Thanks for your
advice.

Congrats to you! Yes the V-twins do have a nice sound to them. You'll enjoy this machine. Try to get the deck set so it doesn't continuously ride on the ground when you set it mow. You want the gauge wheels to ride the ground only on high/irregular spots. Check those tire pressures too.
