I need to replace my engine on my 2160. I've found a 16 and 18 hp Briggs Vanguard engine but don't want to spend $1000+. Any ideas on alternative engines or a good place to find a new or used engine that can be used in the 2160?

Why do you need to replace? A rebuild or more often just head gasket may be all it needs.

It broke the crank shaft and the case and had other internal damage.

Ouch! Pretty easy to diagnose that.

Did you try looking for a donor tractor ? It seems when I look I can buy a whole tractor for less than what people are asking for just an engine or deck. I did that when I needed a new deck, but ended up rebuilding the donor tractor and using it as well.

Is your tractor shaft drive/hydro? If so then you need an extra expensive motor that is so designed. Trust me. I know from experience.
