Cub cadet 1864 hyrostat problem

I have a CC 1864 and having problem regulating the forward and reverse speeds. I have to move the hydostat lever ahead almost 3/4 of the way before the tractor will move. Then once it gets moving, I have to pull the lever back near neutral or else it will go like the wind ... in high speed. This first started last year with problems not going into reverse at all. I adjusted the linkage to make it back up better,however it also will go into high speed in reverse until you pull the lever back towards the neutral position. I am constantly moving the lever forward and inching it back after it gets going.
Anyone have a similar problem? If the hydrostat needs rebuilding can this be done by the amateur or should it be sent away?

I'd wonder that you adjusted the right linkage! The other thing that it could have been to begin with would be the poppet valves onto of the transmission.

Thanks for the link to the service manuals. I will take a look over the hydrostat section to see if I can tackle this myself. Looks like only the 1862 model is listed in the service guide, (says the 1864 replaces it).
