cub cadet 149

hey guys, i have this 149 cub that i just aquired and it runs alright, but when i put the hydrostat in forward it will go good for a second or two and then just pick up speed and i mean a lot of speed all by itself with out me moving the shift lever .......what causes this.........any help would be much appreciated.................Don

If you go to IHRegistry.com, I think there is a tips section or FAQ section that deals with common maintenance problems. Sounds like the control lever is misadjusted and/or you may have some play in the control linkage on the side of the transmission. It's the slotted gizmo with a spring in it. Over time, the slot gets worn and the spring gives out. Basically, you may need to replace that spring. The wear in the slot can be corrected by welding and filing until you bring it back within acceptable limits. If you weld it, be careful not to overheat the shaft and cause the internal seal to be damaged. I think the suggested procedure on the IH website is to wrap the shaft on that gizmo with a wet rag.

I have a cub cadet 129 and I had the same problem. It is a simple fix. With the motor shut off(saftey disclaimer). The shaft that the forward reverse lever ataches to has a friction clamp that gets loose after a while. It is between the console and gas tank. Here is the page from the manual listed above that will solve your issue. Hope this helps.
