Called the shop. Told them to come get mower, sharpen 2 blades and replace the belt. They called just now. Said mower was done and it will be dropped off tomorrow. I asked what the bill was. They said $261. Is this a rip off? How can shapren 2 blades and a belt cost $261?

You didn't say which belt but I know that the list price for one of the deck belts on the 1042 is $72. So you've got transportation charges both ways, labor to remove, sharpen blades and labor to replace the belt. Shop rate is likely around $75 per hour. That's why so many of us work on our own mowers.

Sounds about right. Two-way transportation, an hour or more for labor, ~$20 for the two blade sharpening and list price for a belt.
Owning any outdoor power equipment is an expensive endeavor if you can't do upkeep yourself.

Shop called today. They made a mistake. Bill now $190.......Shop called again they made another mistake. Bill now $175. Should I hurry and go pay it or gamble on a third call and a lower price? Whos doing the billing there a monkey?

UPDATE!!!!!!!!! Shop called after I sent an e-mail ask what happened and why the bill changed so much...........They answered they were sorry so many mistakes were made and were going to refund my $175..... I havent gotten the check yet but they said they would reture my money.
