As long as the rebar is not exposed to the air, it should last forever. It's the combination of moisture and oxygen than make it rust, not just water.

Often one must use what works. The problem is defining "what works".
There are numerous "shortcuts" the prior owners at my Mississippi place used. Many of the lights in the workshops are fluorescent hanging lights powered by extension cords with the ground plug cut off. The main man doors are narrow (28") doors off RV's. One workshop uses teardrop pallet racking upright beams for the frame. The breaker panel is upside down. Some plumbing goes from copper to plastic and back to copper.
I've continued the tradition. I am finishing up putting a window into the "bedroom" of the apartment in the main shop. I brought down a frameless replacement window I took out of my house in Virginia, nice, energy efficient, double insulated, about 25 yrs old and was showing moisture in one of the panes. I built a frame for it but visiting the local hardware stores none sold "window sills" except on special order. I know the importance of an angled, flashed sill. But I've many pieces of 12" wide 5' long 3/4" thick Corian type material that looks like it came from kitchen backsplash stock. It worked and it's at an appropriate slant. And will be FAR more weather resistant than the 3/4" white poplar suggested by the hardware stores.
I know I need more trim around the outside. It was just put in yesterday.

Hey, the former owner must have known my Dad. Dad saw pouring a concrete pad (a step, a shop, a garage or whatever), as an opportunity to get rid of any and all scrap metal he had hanging around--old bicycles, pieces of pipe, broken shovels. The side benefit for him, it took up space and saved on the cost of the concrete.:laughing:

This thread reminds me of what I saw in a link yesterday posted by 3930Dave about alternative living... one family hae built a home similar to a stone and concrete structure... except instead of stone they used beer cans, and any other hynk they had lieing around.
