Craigslist tractor scam?

I always get "ill pay you over the phone and have someone pick it up".

I reply cash only in person. They never write back.

You're missing the opportunity for great fun and a souvenir....get them to send you an actual fake check.

I've done this a couple times, costing them time and the postage to send a fake cashier's check.

I think the all-time classic on one of those scam-baiter sites was the guy who got a fake check for his Mac laptop and shipped in return an empty 3-ring binder with an apple logo on the outside, and photos of a screen and keyboard glued to the insides of the covers. Plus a little ballast. The recipient in London had to pay some $60 (?) customs fees to get possession of his new 'Mac'.

The ones I always get couldn't care less about 'the item'.....generally don't have a clue what you are even selling. They want you to Western Union actual money to 'the shipping company' before you figure out their check is fake.

Last one I hooked, we exchanged probably 20 emails before I finally broke the news to him. His reply "I will have you arrested".....I wrote back and told him his threats were as lousy as his scam....not against the law to have fun with a scammer.....he, on the other hand, was committing mail fraud and bank fraud, and likely a few other felonies.

The scams are pretty recognizable. The first clue is that there is never a city listed on the ad. There is also usually a bunch of special characters in the title: ####### AWESOME TRACTOR %%%%%%%%%

and of course, a crazy good price. I just hit "prohibited" on the ad and Craigslist usually removes it in 24 hours. Not worth wasting my time and I get it out of my search results.

If it's on Craigslist I figure its a scam until proven legit.
