Craigslist tractor scam?

   / Craigslist tractor scam? #71
It seems like everytime I sell a car, motorcycle or tractor on Craigslist I manage to get a scammer to reply. It gets to be ridiculous. I must write gullible sounding adds. I am to the point where I can spot them immediately. Sometimes I go along with them just for fun. I usually up the sales price (Sometimes they agree to that). I also like to make up new details about the vehicle in the correspondence, like "By the way, the engine has thrown a rod, but it still runs OK, but leaks a little oil from the hole in the side of the block." Sometimes it takes quite a while before they realize I am on to them and they just stop replying.

I've done the same thing, up the price and they still say I'll take it. I have started sending them this and I never get another response from them "does your mom know you have her phone?"

I always get "ill pay you over the phone and have someone pick it up".

I reply cash only in person. They never write back.

Tire-kicker story:

I listed some small used front tractor tires made for 12" rims.

The only reply was someone local who after several questions seemed to reveal he wanted free unmounted tractor tires, big ones, for an exercise runner obstacle course. He ignored my description of size and price over several emails.

Sorry fellow. I think we live in different realities.

Nice 21 Kubota B292 Tractor

one owner 28 John Deere 232 4x4 Utility

I don't now a lot about pricing :confused3: BUT these tractors seem like a pretty good deal - I would grab them both but I already have a tractor. :tractor:

Yeah most likely both scams. Just clicked on the JD link, already flagged and removed by CL. The other even if I was in a pinch and needed quick cash, I know the dealer who I got mine from would give me at least double from what's listed in that add. So not saying for sure a scam, but at that price and based on the add when you scroll down all the extra paragraphs that have nothing to do with the original product. They cram all that extra junk into the add to have it show up on just about every search possible.

Take the time it talkes about chickens, tv's, other tractors, riding mowers. Not typical of a honest seller.

Not a problem. Often a Google search will find the same exact posting on Craigslists all over the country! :) I've seen them as far as Guam.

But they are going to be like the 'local' tractor on Ebay I once inquired about. They replied that after listing it on Ebay it was now in Portugal but it could be delivered to me with a moneyback guarantee if I didn't like it. Just wire the funds to get the transaction started ..... (True story!)

It is fun to play with them, and occupies their time.
I usually lead them on with questions, all the while asking them where I may see the tractor.
Last one claimed the tractor was already sitting on a trailer in Kansas City, waiting to be delivered to me.
I said: Oh that is great! My brother lives in Kansas City, I'll have him take a look at it.
Didn't expect a response, and didn't get one.

It seems that CUTs are popular with the scammers.

If there's a tractor with an improbable price, usually very clean looking, often way in the wrong area, and almost always with an email in the main body of the posting, it's a scam (such as "send email to nicewomansname@gmail.com", not an email burried in the contact button).

I've seen something similar with sportbikes (motorcycles), except the prices are typically something strange like not quite round numbers - $1602 and suchlike, not $1600, not $1599. I've never seen a legit ad without a "roundish" number ($2750? yes. $3004? No.)
