Country House

After we ripped off a layer of aluminum siding and wood clapboards we found what you see in the attached picture. Well, that's not what we found initially. Initially we found a mess. Some of the logs had to be replaced. All the original chinking had to be replaced.

We bought all our supplies (chinking, termiticide and sealant) from http://www.permachink.com

Boy! That is one OLD log house! Cool looking place...how far off the road are ya?

Since you're in PA...whereabouts? We're in Windsor...southern York County.

BTW, we ordered the catalogue from the Permachink website. Thank you very much!

We're only 30' off the road in the front of our house (250' in the back). There are only 8 families on the road plus both ends of our road terminate on the same road so we only get local traffic. We're in the northern end of the county.

Very nice house. Very rustic. Just wondering why the previous owners put siding over the nice exposed timbers? Great restoration job on the outside.

Roy,
They buy it from Schroeder's Log Home Supply. Very knowledgable people. They have discontinued the brand my father in law was using and he can't remember what they recommended as the substitute.

Based upon the condition of the clapboards, they probably put the aluminum siding up as a cheaper alternative to replacing all the claps. The owners before that probably put the claps over the logs as an improvement over the logs. Quite the adventure working under tarps draped across the front, then the rear, of the house. Fortunately, we had a porch to stand on in the front and a single story addition in the back.

Yes,Thompsons is about 98% paint thinner.I would recommend a product called Sickens. We used this on a house that had 6" lap Cedar Siding.Sickens is not cheap, about 40 bucks a gallon, but a gallon will go a long way.7 years after initial treatment, siding still looks good,no black areas and not much fading.
