Actually it would be much faster to do coronavirus trials than cancer trials. Many more patients and much faster clinical course. I have no specific knowledge but I知 almost certain there are multiple well designed trials underway now. And, youæ±*e gonna hear about them first via NEJM or Lancet or from Fauci, not YouTube.

Cytokine 都torm is probably the most important target. Coronavirus doesn稚 seem to grow uncontrollably and destroy lung tissue directly. It痴 more likely that it just triggers a host reaction (cytokine storm) that is much more severe in some people than others. Same phenomenon is seen with other infectious diseases. We don稚 know enough about host immune genetics yet to predict which patients are at highest risk and we don稚 have any really effective therapies yet either.

Cytokine storm is kinda like what might happen if you called the fire department to put out a fire in your basement and their response was to fill the basement with water, drowning anyone there.

Virologists to turn worst-hit German district into coronavirus ‘laboratory’
This area in Germany is taking a proactive approach to fighting the virus.

I am profoundly embarrassed by the extreme level of cowardice displayed by Americans. It's absolutely shameful.

With all due respect, you have nothing to lose. You make it very clear that you are isolated by choice; you don't work, so aren't losing a paycheck. The only reason this apparently does affect you is by temporarily lowering your retirement funds; so it doesn't matter to you that others are concerned about their very lives. Why don't you go join the people who are keeping the essential stores open, or volunteer at the local hospital?

Interesting website I stumbled over...

Coronavirus Act Now

Gives various scenarios and estimates state by state how many they think will die depending on what level of social distancing, shelter in place etc is used.

Sorry... have to strongly disagree with this statement... but it's your opinion!

@Island Tractor...
They are saying that 1 in 4 that test positive do not show any symptoms or extremely mild symptoms...would these patients not have stronger antibodies that could be used to possibly develop a treatment that is more effective than the antibodies left in patients with more severe symptoms...?

Report from the front lines, summarized by a poster on Kos: researchers have identified CV DNA (RNA?) and are studying how it attaches to human cells, in order to devise a vaccine that will be a barrier to this attachment.

Per this account this is a major breakthrough and occurred just in the last couple of days. But understanding the attachment hasn't yet suggested how to apply a barrier. Many possible barriers have their own disadvantages. Research continues ...

WOW!! - on SARS-CoV-2, Chinese and MIT researchers are CRUSHING IT right now

That post is by an amateur but it has links to the primary technical reports. I haven't seen this news elsewhere.

Added: wading down through many useless comments there is finally a significant comment posted a couple of hours ago, a link to significant related information:
Experimental AI tool predicts which COVID-19 patients develop respiratory disease - Neuroscience News

As always, the comments are valuable because they expand a topic beyond the original post. Just ignore the snark you have to wade through to find the pearls.

Is your state/county observing social distancing?

Covid-19 Social Distancing Scoreboard — Unacast

An interesting look at how travel has, or has not, been affected at county levels. I wonder if rural counties may not see as large of a drop in movement as they may not be as mobile to start out. Hopefully that's the case, as my county gets a "D" grade.

We just started having a bunch of cases show up last week (0 - 23 cases in 5 days for a population of 100k). It will be interesting to see if that makes people think twice about their travel.

Edited: 0-30 cases in 6 days. The new number *just* came out.

Interesting. We will get there sooner or later with these good minds and enough financial support.

"Official" is the operative word...I really doubt the Chinese government is reporting truthful statistics...

There's plenty of good reasons to question "official statistics", both here and abroad ...

Our state posts this message on the daily report on occasion:

Today’s significant increase in cases is in part due to additional laboratories reporting to DPH, and also improvements in electronic reporting from other laboratories. Patient information is often incomplete and DPH works to complete the records, so data will change over time.

And then there's these guys:

Right-wing evangelist Jonathan Shuttlesworth, a close friend of [arrested megachurch pastor] Rodney Howard-Browne, says he intends to hold a large Woodstock-like Christian gathering in defiance of stay-at-home orders. pic.twitter.com/sn5Pvt1NA5 Right Wing Watch (@RightWingWatch) March 31, 2020

SHUTTLESWORTH: "we're going to hold an outdoor Easter blowout service not online. A national gathering. You come from all over, like Woodstock"
... the photo accompanying that post had the snarky caption "When we finally got to Woodstock we had fluid in our lungs ..."

I'm not going to cite a source for this, too political. Just believe I saw it somewhere. Research it if you wish.
