A good site for seeing what's to come in your state:

COVID-19

It's interesting/frightening to compare states that have restricted social interaction vs ones that have not. The latter will see the peak earlier but some of them will be far short of the number of respirators needed. OTOH it'll be nearly July before my state will be back down to the number of hospitalizations we're having now. I expect the restrictions will last until then. And they can't be undone all at once or the virus will be back.

It can be read on the internet how China only counts the dead as those who died in hospitals, and a large number of the population never left home because hospitals weren't available. We see stories of the number of urns at crematories, the number of cell phone contracts discontinued. We will likely never know the truth.

We read of complaints of lack of face mask and other safety gear. Not enough ventilators and other equipment.

What will we as Americans learn from this?

Where do the compounds for much of our drugs come from? Who owns the steel production that use to be in the US? Who owns the beef and poultry packing plants in the US?

Why is JIT (just in time) introduced as a part of our manufacturing process? Isn't that idea exactly why there is not a huge inventory of ventilators? We don't need them so we don't inventory them. Why don't we inventory them.....because our gov't wanted money, so they tax a company's inventory. Therefore, reduce inventory.

We have a lot of changes to address if we want to gain from this experience.

According to your link, my state will peak on or around April 24... and there only will be a short time when there are more beds needed than available. The problem could arise that people from harder hit areas with inadequate resources will see this and head north, to stay at their camps; stressing resources more than expected.

Doesn't that figure, this is the first time in years that I didn't place my order in February.

Am I misreading that data, or do we here in NY not actually need 40000 ventilators (a number that's been thrown around a lot by our Governor) ?(site claims 4100 needed peak, or is that per day?)

I'm still amazed that for as early as things seemed to get closed up here, that the numbers look this bad. I'm guessing folks weren't doing what was asked.

Here is an interesting paper regarding Italy and the flue
Investigating the impact of influenza on excess mortality in all ages in Italy during recent seasons (213/14–216/17 seasons) - ScienceDirect

The seasonal variation of deaths is quite dramatic. <8,00 one year, and nearly 25,000 another.

It will be an informative comparison of the OVERALL "flu related " mortality when summer comes and slows the "flu season".

This might be much like the historic record for the "natural causes" description for the recording of death. Now we have more distinction in the records, but everyone who dies does so due to something. It's only natural.

Plus a lot of the exposure we are trying to control happened two weeks before.
