Hello from Normandy, I glad to live on a farm, that gives me the priviledge to be outside instead of being locked up in the house. Already have a long list of things to do for the next 14 days, so it will not become boring. Got my supplies in time last week and should be okay for the net 2 weeks. Hopefully then the craze is over with!!!

:welcome: Is your Normandy the one in France?

I was looking for something to make sense to someone who was going to babysit a 8 month old child. The 23 year old mother was working and her babysitter had a funeral to got to. The one going to do the babysitting fill in job has some conditions that put her at great risk, but it's her grand-child. The 23 year old works in a Dr's office in a large city, and I felt that is not ideal.

I emailed that and a coupe of other links to her. It made sense to her and she changed her mind.
This illustrates how we have to reconsider everything we have taken for granted. In this case going to a funeral instead of avoiding it, a grandparent stepping in when help is needed, and the mother of a young child who has to go to work in a location of higher risk. Cancelling or deferring a funeral ceremony seems like a good idea. Cremation (ideally) or burial now without guests, and a memorial ceremony later, seem like good ideas in theory but culturally that's going to be wrenching. African traditional funerals were identified as focal points for spread of Ebola and there's something to learn from their example.

Also in the example above: Granny 'sheltering in place' and staying away from the medical employee is what's best for her, if the funeral-goer can be convinced to cancel and stay home with the kid (and avoid bring back the contagion).

These changes to normal living are going to be difficult.

Me personally - trying to decide if we should buy a month's groceries and retreat to exile in the ranch. At the moment we're at home in town with a couple of weeks of supplies. Sonoma County, where the ranch is, is likely to join the (adjacent) Bay Area total shutdown which might force us to turn around instead of entering the county.

Strange times.

Sonoma and Napa counties are at the outer perimeter of the greater Bay Area. Both are principal tourist destinations for Bay Area folks.

Both 'plan to issue shelter-in-place orders as soon as possible'.

Obviously America has a long ways to go before we are over the hump of this pandemic...but sooner or later there will be a light at the end of the tunnel...

When was the last time that Americans collectively had something of this significance to look forward to?...

another silver lining, China's air pollution is down from ripple effect of coronavirus, will save lives of many.
I don't think that will help US though.

Italy sure has a problem, must be scary to live in Northern Italy right now.

Welcome...

Just spoke with my cousin in Austria... said the same... lots of projects around the farm to do... she said those in the city have life much harder.

Here's a link with a story of an American who was in Italy playing professional basketball.

"The hospitals are at such a capacity all throughout Italy, but especially in the towns around me. If a young person such as myself came in with the virus, and an older person came in, say 65, or 70, at such a capacity they would only treat me. And they would tell the older person to go home. They were literally choosing who was going to get treatment because of the rates that elderly people are dying at, versus the rate of recovery for younger people.

Americans that haven’t witnessed what I saw in Italy, and what you see going around on the internet, people think it’s just the flu. Coronavirus travels so much faster than the flu. It’s kind of an ignorance."

Here's the link to get the whole story. Coronavirus: Ex-Wisconsin star Ethan Happ back from Italy, quarantined

How about War On Terrorism?

Do you really want me to answer that? :D

How about War On Terrorism?
Not even close...to really effect the typical US (civilian) citizen...something has to hit closer to home than most terrorist attacks...911 was an obvious exception...

Do you really want me to answer that?

I don't think you can really...at least not from a personal perspective...(remember the key word is collectively)

Numbers at this point are insignificant...it's all about testing including those that may have already recovered from the virus that may not ever get tested...unless they develop a test for COVID-19 after the fact...we may never know what the actual numbers are...

You are correct in your assessment. What I find unbelievable, is that "our" American healthcare system is ALREADY underwater, understaffed, unprepared, AND apparently... has no back stock of supplies. What is going on ???
