I'm looking for a cordless phone with enough range to use around the house and yard. Nothing fancy, just a consumer-quality phone with a range of perhaps 200 feet so I can talk when I'm out in the shed without having to run wires. I'm sure someone here has something that works.

Thanks.

i've been thru a bunch of different brands: have 3 different ones that i use right now: and nothing that works reliably any where near 200ft: now if i put the base unit outside, that would make a big difference: could you put the phone line in a protected area outside and hook the base unit there?

If you have electric in the shed, I would go for one of those new types that use the one base to plug the phone line in and then run several cordless phones off of it with each cordless phone having a dock to charge on. The cool thing about these is that you can use it to call other phones in the house. I have the motorola 5.8 ghz and love it. I have used it at distances of up to 600 feet away from the base. On my motorola I have the base unit and 6 handsets. With all of that, I am only using one phone jack in the living room.
Good luck,
Steve

I have a panasonic. it's a kxtga523 (about 2 years old so there's probably a newer version out). It's a 5.8 ghz unit, and you can add as many stations as you want. The base station has a built in digital answering machine. I'v gone about 230 feet out of the house, and into the barn, and can still talk perfectly. Cost about a hundred bucks.

I've got a cheapy GE 2.4 Ghz cordless from Walmart. It works over 200' from my house. I had it in my shirt pocket while snowplowing my neighbors driveway with the tractor. I was about 250' from my house when it rang. It seemed to worked fine. I don't know how much further it would have worked.

I have the same as AnthonyK and know I've been up to 300ft from base unit till I start loosing signal. I have the base unit in trailer and two handsets in the shop and one in the shed, I have no problem getting to a phone.

One of the reasons I like to spend more time in the garage is to "get away" from the ringing phone... nothing but tractor noise.

70 miles! Shoot, I could get rid of my cell phone if I had a portable that had ranges like that. :D

Hmm, I just checked ebay and it looks like these "long range" phones would be quite illegal in the US. They operate in the 230 Mhz range. Also, note the guarentee line in this listing. I really don't need the FCC rapping on my door.

eBay: Long Range Cordless Phone System - Model SN-358 (item 280067369584 end time Jan-12-07 09:25:01 PST)

"GURANTEE

I will guarantee the auction item for 7 days from the date you receive it. If you are not completely satisfied, simply return the item and your money will be refunded less 20% restocking fee (shipping & handling charges and insurance are non-refundable). The above guarantee does not apply if the phone is not legal in your country because it is your responsibility to find out before bidding!"

I like the part where they charge you 1 cent for the phone and $138 for shipping and claim that you can return it under guarantee for a total refund (1 cent) minus the $138 shipping charges.
PS. They also charge a 20% restocking charge. I wonder how they keep 20% of your penny?

I'm not sure if there is a phone for residential use made with a technology call "Spread Spectrum". Uniden makes them for telecom mfgr's that for business use (3300 feet). That is the technology to look for, for increased distance (actually not the full intent of SS, just a benefit).
Home use with Spread Spec. may not be designed same as biz use. No way to know if a neighbor will have same. But I am just guessing about that. You might try to find a telecom interconnect (a Key System/PBX dealer) in your area and ask them to sell you a cordless for analog line use with SS.
