Congratulations to all PT Owners

I am sorry that I created such turmoil and bickering. I was only commenting on the many positive stories I have read in the PT forum while they seem to be far and few between in most of the other forums. The pride of ownership of PTers seems to be more pronounced and with more substance than what I have read elsewhere.

I do appreciate the remarks about the need to find someone willing to work on the PT if it is necessary and beyond what I am either willing or capable of doing.

The negative comments have not turned me off as I really think that a PT is best for me in my property situation. I spent some valuable time with a big three dealer over the weekend and I came away with less than a secure feeling that I would not be in over my head with my property using his recommendation as it came with many conditions including tire filling or wheel weights, front weights if I don't want to mow with the loader and other things to accomplish what I think a PT will allow me to do with just one attachment.

I still want to congratulate PT Owners for the may useful and insightful posts. I hope to soon be part of the group publishing pictures of what I am doing.

I just spoke with a landscaper across the street from my job. They are using a PT1430 over there today to rip out some shrubs and remove some sod. I knew they had a PT425, but not the PT1430. I asked if they had any more and they said they have four total. This is one of the established landscapers that has been around since I was a kid. For pro's to buy one, then another and another.... that says something. If they weren't making money for them, they probably wouldn't keep buying them. That's good for the homeowner to know. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I am considering either the 425 or 1430 for various reasons.

The 1430 because of the diesel and the accompanying torque to wheels for the climb up my slopes of 15 to 20 degrees (not excessively steep but consistent over most of the property to be mowed. Additionally, I have a creek to clean and widen and I want to add rip rap which may at times be too large for the 425 to handle with ease.

I was a bit concerned about the size difference of the 425 and 1430 machines but after looking at CUTS and even SCUTS with the ballast boxes or other things required, it appears that any would be longer than the 1430. It seems that in any application being considered with a CUT there is the need for another implement to offset the weight which does not seem to be the case with a PT.

The 425 because I can get the same selection of attachments at a total price of $7k less than the 1430 after adding a few items not in the 1430 package but in the "it would be nice to have category".

Personally, I would have much rather had the bigger diesel machine myself, but it wouldn't fit down the rows of our tree plantations. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Having just looked at my first PT1430 in person, I would have to say that it isn't all that much bigger than the PT425. It is wider, for sure, and a little longer, but not a huge machine at all. It had turfs and didn't mark up the lawn at all, although, it has been very dry and the soil is pretty hard. I'd consider it if I needed a bigger machine. Looked bullet proof, too. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Did you hear it running Moss? I used to work around, and occasionally on some good sized air cooled Deutz diesels, and they defined Loud.

I was wondering how the 1430 compared to the 425 in the noise department.

I don't know enough about Deutz's line to know if they made purely air-cooled models, but the oil-cooled ones on the PTs are certainly loud. The 1430, with one less cylinder, is a bit more rackety than my 1845. I wear muffs or plugs, but I should have done that for all the years on other machines, too. Somewhere I posted a dB measurement I did with the rough-cut mower at full chat. I think the total noise was in the 95 dB range, but I don't recall exactly.

It's been over thirty years since I was around those Deutzes, but I may have erred in calling them air cooled. They may have been oil cooled or a combination. The memory ain't what it used to be--as my wife keeps reminding me /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

What we have here are attempts to communicate our various, often contrasting, opinions in a clear opinionated ("Holding stubbornly and often unreasonably to one's own opinions.") manner rather than some mushy PC 'IMHO' bologna!!

When I read a post with the words 'IMHO', 'maybe', 'perhaps', 'might', 'could', or 'should', I discount that information as being from someone who hasn't even convinced himself yet!!

 I do not know how much more torque is available at the wheels of a PT-1430, but I do know that the PT-1430 weighs about twice as much as a PT-425, and would, therefore, require about twice the torque at its wheels for similar climbing performance!!

When I read a post with the words 'IMHO', 'maybe', 'perhaps', 'might', 'could', or 'should', I discount that information as being from someone who hasn't even convinced himself yet!! 

It's called qualifying a statement, and it's an indicator that the poster realizes he can't possibly have all the facts that apply in the situation, since he can't crawl inside the questioner's head, and he isn't at the other person's property.

IMHO, it's a sign of maturity.
