Hello,

New or used? John Deere or not? Unfortunately, money is an issue. That being said, I want a "10-year +" tractor for mowing and wood hauling. I'm hoping comparison information can help me make the best decision.

Thanks in advance,
MIke

Welcome to TBN, Mike. Of course this forum is for Introductions, so now go the first forum Buying/Pricing/Comparisons and post your question. You'll be much more likely to get responses there. There's certainly nothing wrong with buying a used tractor, if you intend to pay cash. You'll almost sure to find less favorable financing of used tractors as compared to new if you want to finance one. John Deere, New Holland, and Kubota are still the "big 3"; i.e., best known brands, but as you can plainly see here on TBN, there are quite a number of other good tractors.

:welcome: to TBN! What is your budget set at? What size are you looking for? What type of uses will you be primarily using this tractor for?

John Deere certainly makes good tractors as do others. I have bought new as well as used, just depends.

above 3 websites err 4 websites i should say. should allow you to narrow down pretty good on used tractors. do not be in a rush to buy something if you are looking for a deal. if you can wait a couple months or little longer you can normally find a better deal here or there.

buying used means knowing how to check a tractor and make sure it is not going to be a dead tractor. example letting it run in high idle for say 30 minutes, and then check for leaks. and trying all hyd and see if they are loose or not. example raising all hyd up shutting off tractor and letting it set there for 30 minutes and see if things fall back down.

tred on tires can be very important. new tires for tractors can be very expensive. tractor tires are not car tires. and in that cost a good amount of cash. if just half the tred is missing it can mean a lot less over all traction compared to a full tred new tractor tires.

use equipment = extra maintenance and repairs. if you are not mechanically inclined. use stuff can be very very bad. and can be just as expensive as a new tractor if you are paying someone else to do repairs. if you are doing repairs yourself. john deer and ford/newholland have descent "tractor parts" with diagrams on there websites for majority of things. some other manufacturers are not as good. or you have to pay to see. AGCO Parts Books also has some part books for good amount of other manufacturers as well.

again hit the buy/pricing/comparision forum on TBN, give details of how many acres you want to mow, and anything else you might want to do with the tractor. and folks can help ya narrow down a size of tractor that should work better for you for majority of things you want to do if not all the things. that way when looking at the given links i noted above, you have a better idea of what to look for. without as much worry of getting something to small or to large for what meets your needs.

Lots of good used Deeres around...

How much acreage are you planning to mow? Is this finish mowing ( a lawn) or field mowing?

Right up front, I'll suggest 25-30 PTO HP, but even at 10 years old or more, that would likely exceed your $10K budget.

Anyway, more info as to your situation will result in better suggestions...

Along with deciding on the PTO hp, decide what type of transmission you want. Hydo is really nice if you are going to be doing much back and forth. If you are going to do much grass cutting a mid mount mower that is wider than the tractor is much nicer then having the mower on the 3PT. If you are going to be mowing around things.

If you are going to get a loader, I highly recommend MFWD ie 4WD. Also make sure you can remove the loader or at least the bucket, if you are going to be cutting grass around buildings. If you can purchase from a private individual you will not have to pay sales tax. Unless you know tractors, suggest you take someone with you that does, even if you purchase from a dealer. I included a few more web sites. Plan to spend the money on a tech manual, you will not be sorry on doing this.

Good luck lets us know how you made out, along with pictures. Plan to change the oil, filter, and fuel filter. Maybe also the hydraulic fluid and filter and air filter.
