I want some hydraulic cylinder safety props. 2 - 2" X 16" pieces of angle should do the trick. What would be better to use, hot rolled or cold rolled?

For that job it doesn't matter.
What does matter is how thick the angle is and you're leaving that info out.
How thick should I go?

`Like Yogi says, a channel would be better to assure it doesn't pop out. You could add some tabs to a angle, to make that.

That's a compression load, very easy for a 3/16-1/4" angle. Maybe 2x2, 3x3 might provide a better "footprint".

You can even use aluminum angle or channel, less chance or marring the rod. I've never seen "cold rolled" angle though.

Good point on marking up the rod. I use 2x2x3/16 steel. A couple layers of duct tape would go a long way to prevent marks.

I always figured this

would work better than this

WAY more contact with the piston housing.
