this goes along the lines of a stupid question (although i know there are really no stupid ones!):

just when does the clutch have to be engaged?

i know that it has to be engaged when changing gears, what about forward/reverse, changing from Low/Med/High and going from 2 to 4 wheel drive?

i believe i know the answer to this - but perhaps someone can put my mind at ease..

I believe the manual calls for using the clutch to do all of those. Of course, you have a different tractor than I, but my manual says to use the clutch for 2/4WD changes, but if you're sitting still, and you should be, it will change without the clutch in, as will the range selector on mine. F/R shuttle requires the clutch on that model, but you don't have to come to a complete stop. John

How about disengaged instead of engaged? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I use it for everyhting just because. When changing ranges or 2-4wd. stop and use the loader to raise the front wheels off the ground . This allows for real easy transitions. You do not have to be at a full stop for the forward - reverse changes .Did my first fuel cannister change on my DK 55 today and it runs real smooth. Funny how things get a bit funky without notice.

one of the most important things to remember about the clutch on any machine is ,---- GET YOUR FOOT OFF THE PEDAL when you are NOT actually using it.
The pedal makes for a comfortable foot rest. That ain't what its for.
Do not "feather" the clutch when digging. Choose a lower gear and GET YOUR FOOT OF THE PEDAL.
Proper use of the clutch will result in many thousands of hours of use. Improper use will result in just a few hours of use and many $$$$ in replacement.
Have fun and be careful virgil
