Clamp-on Ammeter suggestions

I've needed a clamp on ammeter a couple times in the last year and now I need one again so I'm going to go and buy one. Any suggestions on models you like, features I can't live without, etc? Sears has one for $49 and they also have a fluke for $99. I only need to use it on 220v, probably never greater than 100 or so amps.

I've got the Sears one. Don't use it often, but it always seems to work just fine.

I have been using amprobe meters for 30+ years and never had any problems with them. I have and use the RS-1 and RS-3 which is also an ohm meter. you can look at them here web page

I have an AEMC Model AE211721 that's been great. They sell for less then $100. It will measure AC/DC Volts, AC current to 400A, continuity, resistance and frequency. For about $120 you can buy the AEMC 211766 that's true RMS.

Funny I just picked one up this week at one of those deals stores. It was 30.00 . One extra feature was an insulation tester which I was totally unfamiliar with but have since found out to have a good use.

Thanks for suggestions. I've seen a few models (fluke) that say they measure starting current (also called inrush). That is the thing I'm usually most interested in. It appears that not all models will do that. I assumed these things all captured the maximum value recorded, so if it's attached during startup it should capture starting current. Or do these things not respond fast enough to capture starting current unless they have some special sauce inside?

Fluke or Amprobe is what I have used for years. The Sears model will be made by someone else, I don't know who. I would say that any of the three will probably do a good job and last for years. I have a 30+ year old Amprobe RS1 that is still kicking.

I have an Amprobe that I used when I was an electrician for many years, many years ago. All the electricians I ever knew used Amprobes but Fluke has a very good reputation too.

I use a Fluke.. very nice peice. it is easy to use and get into tight spaces when needed

I've got a fluke from back when I was a sheetmetal guy that I really like, we had amprobes around the shop and they were both good. I think I remember one guy haveing a GB meter but I don't remeber much about it.

I would go with a fluke or an amprobe meter.
