I have a 2004 CK-20 gear drive that I cannot get started. It cranks and blows smoke but just won't seem to turn all the way over. I've only got a little over 200 hours on it. So far this is what I've done.

- Checked the battery
- Checked the fuel
- Changed the fuel filter
- Verified fuel was getting to the pump
- Checked that the glow plugs were working using a meter
- Opened the plugs to see if fuel was getting there when I cranked on it

Can anyone think of anything else to look at or what the problem might be?

Thanks

It cranks and blows smoke but just won't seem to turn all the way over.

Can you clarify. When you say it won't seem to "turn all the way over", do you mean run or turn over?

If it is not turning over, then I'd try a new battery even if the current one is reading OK with a voltmeter.

If it is turning over and blowing smoke but not starting then have you tried cycling the glow plugs two or three times before cranking?

Did the poor starting just happen one day or has this been gradual?

did you check your engine kill switch ? the little red pull next to the flashers.... on my ck20hst i have to use it to kill my engine (short in the starter) and if i don't push it all the way in, the next time i go to start it i get the same results you are talking about.

i would pull it out and then push it back in again just to be sure....
good luck

The problem started about a month before it finally stopped starting. It was hard to start in the mornings but once it was started it was fine the rest of the day. I thought it was just because the temp was in the low 40's. By turn all the way over I meant to run :)

I've tried cycling the plugs 2-3 times and that didn't make a difference. I also looked at the kill switch and looks ok as well.

With that clarification it sounds like fuel is not getting to the cylinders to me but I'm no diesel mechanic. Let's see if one of the dealers shows up to answer your question.

Sounds like the fuel shut off solenoid is not working.
That is #20 it has a plunger that moves in and out.

If it cranks and blows smoke, then it is getting fuel. Smoke is not magically made when cranking over an engine. I say it is the glow plugs since it was getting harder to start as the temps went down. If not that, then either there is not enough air getting in or you have lost compression in the cylinders.

Could the starter motor be drawing too much current, if it is not cranking over fast enough it could be the issue, are the glow plugs getting voltage

Along with this check your air filter. Low 40's is not that cold and shouldn't require glow plugs...although it will get things going faster.

When I crank mine in cold weather...I see white smoke drifting from the exhaust(raw atomized fuel), then black smoke(fuel buning but not hot enough), then the motor will kick off and rattle a bit until it warms up after a minute or 2.

Keep us posted.
