How much did this thing jack your property tax value ?

I'm just a landowner and not an official in the township nor an assessor. Fair? Heck no from my standpoint. I don't write the rules nor enforce them either. I do own land in an area with many native Americans however and few paying landowners. Who do you think pays for the education, special education, welfare, fire protection, roads, county police protection, county libarary, tech schools, and all of the necessities deemed necessary by some elected officials????????? Chalk it up to the "American way" my friend. If you live long enough - you too will find beauracracy and local government digging into your pocketbook too - it is only a matter of time my friend!

Here's my relatively cheap but pretty theftproof, rodentproof, airtight, and watertight solution. No labor required to construct.

Here's a couple pics of the one I mentioned earlier in the thread.

This pic is close to where it would be if I left it open. It would just need a little bracing on the posts for stability.

EDIT - Just for reference, the one I built is 10x50'.

I decided to close it in.

Here's a pic from the yard side. The far side has 5 open bays. Power comes in from overhead due to the creek.

bczoom, that's about what I have in mind, but just one bay.

Highbeam, how much was that thing and how was it delivered? I'm assuming it is one of those used cargo containers.

Most counties will let you contest their assessments. If you feel that you have been unjustly assessed, I would fight them on it. Give that a try. I would tear the building down if they added $10,000 on to my property's assessed value for putting up the posts and tarp and build the moveable building on skids. The next thing I would do is to start a petition to recall the county assessor.

The actual assessment was probably $99 -- with a $9,901 fine for not getting a building permit. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

twstanley, You got me thinking for a while because I'm in need of a horse shelter, car port and tractor storage so the taxes are going to add up. I see lots of metal bottom structure/metal roof car ports that are portable my neighbor even has one. I looked up his tax records and sure enough they were taxing him on it, that wasn't good enough so I called the appraisal district and their response was if its on your property in Kendall county we do assess them as taxable structures. Oh well for a while I thought I'd just get three now its back to building a big barn if their going to tax it I might as well build it like I want it.

Joe, What you have makes sense and accomplishes the criteria of relative security and portability. Your photos show a sea going container in darn good shape from what I see. Where or how does one buy something in this good of shape?

I did contest my cabin's assessment. It was utterly ridiculous. They came down on the assessment, now it is simply ridiculous.

Tax reform is the answer. (Remember why we fought the American Revolution?)

I think maybe I'll hide my shed in the woods. My brother-in-law who owns a farm next to me claims they check for buildings and improvements by air, at least when making tax maps. So maybe I'll need some of that camo netting too. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think a good measure of a law is when it tempts very law-abiding and conscientious citizens to consider deceit. When it does, its a bad law.

Sorry for the soap box, but I am glad someone brought this up so that I can find out how much a $300 shed is really going to cost me.

I would like to know if one of those cargo containers is considered a 'structure'.

N80 - I completely forgot to mention something else. If you live on this piece of land, it is a negligible item because you are already insured. However, I don't live on my piece of "heaven" and I didn't need insurance on it. The minute I put up what my township called a permanent structure, I had a liability and therefore needed to be insured. I now pay more in liability insurance than my "temporary" lean-to cost me.

I find that the older I get, the less I know and understand about common sense. Maybe I qualify for counseling? Keep smiling - it fools the rest of the group into thinking you know more than they do..... Clyde

And then if you really want to hear about stupidity, let us talk about the Dept of Natural Resources or whatever they call themselves in your state. For a property owner to pull down his pants, sit or squat, and leave behind one sheet of toilet tissue on his own property, legally you need a sanitary permit. No more impromptu outhouses unless they meet state code. Strange that they haven't figured out a way to tax this by usage yet. All of you inventors out there - here is an idea to work on and sell. Remember however that I get a commission and it is due by the first of every quarter

They got us coming and going.
In many areas the cargo containers are considered un-sightly so they are banned. The building on 6x6 skids may beat the tax man but every area figures out a way to get what they consider is their due. I play by the rules when they are looking and if they tick me off enough, I will move to an area like where Eddie lives where there are fewer rules and regulations.

I put up a 12 x 20 temporary storage building from Shelter King. It met my requirement for a cheap, easy to install structure that I could drive my tractor into. I wish it were taller so I didn't have to fold down the ROPS but I was between jobs and I was on a budget.

And to top it off because it is a temporary building it is not taxed. I had intended for it to be temporary, but in my book temporary just got a whole lot longer.

So far it's survived three winters with some heavy snows and looks to be good for several more.

If that's the case, my property tax will go down. My tractor shed made property values go down in the entire neighborhood. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Maybe it goes like this add the shed to your land and your taxes go up but your neighbors goes down because the shed causes a blight on the neighborhood.

You should have put the shed on your neighbors land and got a tax break! lol
