chain top link

Try this method it has worked for me. Replaced the solid bars on brush hog with chains. I would not replace third link with chain . Even with chain on brush hog you still have watch . If tractor would come over backwards you have no "stop" to control it . with a solid bar you do . Check out chains on my unit. This is some thing that helps in hill country like WV as you see in background of picture.

As a safer alternative, try running the chain through a length of pipe that is a bit shorter than your chain. This will provide a limiter to how much the implement (or tractor) can flip up if you snag something.

An alternative I'm using is a pair of large D-Shackles. I have one pinned to the top of the slasher (as we call "brush hogs" here in Oz) and another pinned through the top link eye. This gives me a good amount of "pivot". Very simple (except that the shackles needed to be opened up a couple of mm...). I don't (as yet!) have a toplink for each 3pt attachment, so this is very convenient and cost me a couple of dollars. The shackles I'm using are 19mm (3/4") screw pin jobs - with the threads "gnarled" just enough to prevent them unscrewing in use (but also require fencing pliers to do up!).
