Caught a thief!!

I just read something the other day that reports many companies are doing background checks on their prospective new hires. If they come back with ANY felony OR misdemeanor convictions, they won't hire them. Guess what? 65 million Americans, or about 1 in 4 working age adults, have felony or misdemeanor convictions. The unemployment rate will most likely never drop further than it is right now, and most likely will continue to rise if companies maintain these policies. There is little hope for meaningful employment even for someone that has paid his dues

That's one effect of the zero tolerance drug laws. Once these dumb kids get caught, ( if they are caught, they usually aren't that smart to start with.) they have little option after that. They might as well sell drugs or steal, they can't ever get a decent job anyway. Of course if you have money, you can make that go away. I grew up with a guy that had 3 felony drug convictions by his late 20's. His family got the right lawyers, got his record cleaned. He is now a lawyer....

They do that in my community... that is snap a picture, plus driver's license and vehicle license and then mail out the check in 7 days.

Local Law Enforcement also spot checks those selling for wants and warrants.

Do they also video the item being scrapped? I would think that would make the junkyards more careful about scrapping items that are obviously stolen - like brass plaques, etc.

There's a local ordinance here that you have to show ID and leave a thumb print. Then the scrap yard has to hold onto it for 30 days before they can sell it.

I don't have much trouble with tresspassers, but always wanted to post this sign.

IF YOU MUST TRESSPASS, PLEASE WEAR THE CLOTHING YOU WANT TO BE BURIED IN.

Reminds me of the sign:

TRESSPASSERS PLEASE LEAVE NAME OF NEXT OF KIN

:)

Increase of theft may be the best reason to keep a backhoe on your property... think about it.

Seriously, a Simple solution that would greatly reduce the sensless theft of metal for scrap. Think I read it on here before, don't know how to make it happen: Pass state laws that require scrap sellers to be paid by check, sent in the mail, to address on the drivers license presented when the scrap is sold. maybe even require scrap to be held 48 hours before "processing". Bet the IRS would like it too. I suspect a lot of these people are not paying their income tax on the scrap they sell. May not stop all the theft, but at least we tax some of the them!

In Quebec a driver's lisc is required to sell scrap now.
Also any manhole covers can not be accepted for scrap as too many were being 'lifted', now that's scary, imagine driving over an open manhole? Kinda ruin your day.
On the other hand many pot holes are manhole sized around here.

We would have to add the Board of Directors and Stockholders too.

Most I know never vote the proxy statements they receive and hardly anyone reads them.
