Hello Everyone,
I purchased a 1967 Case 310G dozer (diesel) with a 4 way blade yesterday and have been trying to figure out the battery configuration. Luckily the powers of google helped me find this great knowledge base.

My 310 came with two (600amp) batteries that were not hooked up. One battery is junk and the other is brand new. The place I purchased the dozer used a Jump box to start it and then I just left it running on my trailer until it was unloaded at home. My question is what is the proper battery size (two 600amp?) and the sequence in which they should be connected? I assume it is ground to negative (bat 1), positive (bat 1) to positive (bat 2), then negative (bat 2) to 2nd ground?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as the lady who sold it is still looking for the manual. Attached is a picture of my new toy! :)

Look and see if there are any type of identification tags on the starter motor, or on the alternator or generator, if it has one. This would give you and idea if its a 12 or 24 volt system. If it's 12, then hooking both batteries up, pos. to pos. to the starter motor, and then neg. to neg. to ground on the engine would give you a 12v parallel hookup. If it's a 24v system, then the batteries would be hooked in series. Pos. on one battery to the starter, then a jumper from the neg. post to the pos. post on the other battery, and then the neg. on that battery to ground. Two batteries rated at 600 CCA each would be a good start. The higher the CCA rating, the more cranking power you will have. I would go with the highest CCA you can get with the battery group size that will fit in the battery box on the machine. Now, don't confuse CCA with CA. CCA is cold cranking amps rated a 0 deg. CA is cranking amps, which is rated at 32 deg. Don't let someone fool you with a higher CA rating!

I just run a single 900CCA in my 310 diesel. Works fine although the battery seems to only last about 3 years. I think they just get shaken to much to last much longer.

Thanks for the replies, I will check the starter and other electrical components for ID tags. The way the current wires lay, it appears it was wired as a 12v parallel hookup.

MtnViewRanch, I never thought of using one battery with a high CCA rating. I might just go that route since I will be repairing/replacing most of the battery cables anyways.

I have a 310G and it is a 12 volt system. I have two 12 volt batteries in parallel, althought I have started it with just one in the past. My manual indicates that it is a traditional 12 volt negative ground system. I don't use mine alot and I swap out the batteries between it and another vehicle that I don't use a lot.

If there is anything in the manual that you think could help you out, let me know and I can scan it and email it to you.

Good luck and take care.

Get one AGM battery, vibration won't bother it.

When one of the batteries died in my diesel truck, I replaced them both with one Optima Red Top AGM.

The red top batteries lasted about a year in my dozer. Hardly worth the $$$ IMO. I went through 2 of them in the dozer and 4 in my truck. Last 3 years in the truck. STD batteries at less than 1/2 the money last as long or longer. I gave up on the red tops. Now the blue and yellow seem to be a different story, but even more $$$.

Just my experience. ;)

Thanks for all the help. Yesterday I cleaned, repaired, and replaced all the battery connections as needed. Re-installed the batteries in parallel and she fired right up. However, I will probably end up removing one of the batteries and use the extra battery box as a tool box/storage.

When the two OEM wet cell lead-acid batteries died in my diesel truck I replaced them with two red top AGM starting batteries.
When the single OEM Chinese wet cell lead-acid battery finally died in my dozer after nine years I replaced it with another wet cell battery.
