Re: Can\'t get steering wheel off

I'm still confused about the brass hammer , Eddie. I'm going to hit the nut, not the shaft. If I bruise the nut, they're about $.25.

Re: Can\'t get steering wheel off

That ought to work right now. It would make it a 2 man job. One needs to be pulling up on the wheel while the other hits it. (the shaft)

If you leave the nut high enough just to hit it then it will crush down on the threads and end of the shaft. I have crushed the nut and damaged the end of the shaft using a regular hammer. A brass hammer will not crush the nut or damage the shaft. A dead blow hammer will work also. You do it however you want to, but I will always use a brass hammer after a problem I had one time.

Re: Can\'t get steering wheel off

I realize how the shaft is made, etc. I think a lot are made that way. We don't know how bad the rust is, if any. My suggestion to use penetrating oil and just drive it around is not going to get it off any time soon but it does work.

Re: Can\'t get steering wheel off

What I am saying is you can use penetrating oil for a year and you still won't be able to reach and pull the wheel off. You will still have to hit it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That's for sure, if you want it off immediately.

Re: Can\'t get steering wheel off

Please don't forget the part of Eddie's advice "--screw the nut flush with the end of the steering column and while pulling up on the outer part of the steering wheel--".

I didn't leave the nut loosely on the end of the shaft when I was removing a steering wheel at an auto wrecking yard as teenager. The steering wheel flew off when I hit the shaft --right into my face! Now, 50 yers later I'm still feeling the aftereffects of the facial fractures I suffered then. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: Can\'t get steering wheel off

I'll have to admit that I got a fat lip by taking the nut off and framming the underside with my hands.
