Can you come help me mow

I get a call for Sis and BIL who took on a mowing job that was too much for their mower and wanted me to come help with my bota. This is what I found when I got there.

I wouldn't even want to do that with my BX without the rotary cutter. It will do it, but I sure hate to.

Looks like a lot of work for the mower operator, a lot of head turning, paying attention to where you are at, avoiding all those obsticles, type of job....

I agree, not a job for a mower, but more for a rotary cutter to knock it down first then maybe and that is just MAYBE run back over it with a mower. Even then the surplus growth will tax the belts on a mower, although some of the better ones will go thru it with no problems. I would probably attempt it with my Steiner 525 as it has plenty of power, good belt setup, and hydrostatic so I could creep into some of the thicker bunches without overloading the mowing deck. Still could be a problem with hidden items, that a rotary cutter would take in stride (and throw across the yard). Layering the cuts, first high and then lower when you can see might be a smart move, but requires double cutting.
If you have already done this, and didn't tear up anything, good job!!!

I wouldn't either. It amazes me what these BX's will cut, but that sure is pushing the envelope.

Agreed - rotary cutter...or as I called it growing up on the farm in KY... a bush hog. I have mowed many times through stuff like that with our old bush hog but not a finish mower. That would be slow going.

IMO that needs to be bush hogged one week, flail mown the next week or two, & then finished mown in another week or two.

You can bush hog/rotary cut that just fine. Just use the right tool at the right speed for the right job.

Should be done by now then. With the mmm you just need to go over the tall stuff twice.

I bought Kubota new off dealers lot. Drove it home, about 5 miles, 30 minutes, then, with 2 hours on the tractor, broke it in with this. Not what I wanted to do, but had to do. 17.5 acres worth of this stuff. Philip.

You used the mower we pretty much suggested for the o/p project (or should I say the project he got suckered into, lol?) The tractor is just the power supply to turn the correct implement needed to do a job.

Did you mow it or decide against it? It's definitely a job for a bush hog type mower, not your mmm deck. But if you absolutely, positively had to mow it, you do have a box blade and maybe a FEL on the BX, right? You could use them prior to mowing to find and level or remove the worst of the protruding obstacles that would beat up your deck. Not the best solution, but that might save you some grief. Then mow it, taking slow, small passes so the deck can process what you drive over and you can see what is being mowed a little better.

Be careful of that darn plastic fan, and mind the beehives as well ! Good luck!

I get a call for something like that on occasion, Stihl KM90R with a straight shaft string trimmer attachment, and my helper gets the FS55...it ain't that bad of a job, really...just keep telling yourself that and you'll be fine.

it actually does not look that bad. compared to what i have ran the allis chalmers CA with belly finish mower.

take 1/3 to 1/2 passes. mower deck set as high as possible with the main discharge side of deck furthest away from cutting.

i do not like stating it, but make sure you can see the pulleys or spindles/shafts for each pulley easily when on the mower. tall weeds can quickly clog a mower deck up. and if you can keep an eye on the shaft it is much easier to unclog vs waiting for you to smell the belt burning or nothing is getting cut. ((center pully)) atleast for me. is were the belt wraps around it a couple times, so that blade / pulley / shaft normally ever gets clogged up.

cut everything you can. with above, then hopefully by the time your down. the rest will by dry enough to come back with a slightly lower deck if not all the way lower.

if it gets to dark, or to wet, i try not to leave things go longer than a day after the inital cut. or less the weeds and grass end up matting, making next time mowing to cut it down harder.

long handle straight screw driver, a utility knife, some paper towels and jug of water. paper towels and water is to wash off. you can get a bunch of bugs and slime on ya. when ya underneath the deck pulling the clogs out.

The puc is a little misleading the part that were "grass" was thick thick. When mowed at top the cut grass would lay half way to your knees. I used at box blace to "rake" the cut crass into piles that looked like busted round bails.
Also thouse were not bee heives but corner colums at the old gate. It is conc. block(s)
