Can my L3940 handle a JD MX7 cutter?

Once you jump to 8', you are in a double spindle. You still get wider, but you are only half as deep. An 8' cutter is approximately 8' wide and 4' deep... as apposed to a 7' cutter which is approximately 7' wide and 7' deep. Tail wheels extra of course.

Seven footers are a unique beast. IMO the 5 HP per foot of mower really don't apply here. Being a single spindle, they stick out the back rear far.

There was a thread on TBN somewhere that discussed 6' vs 7' vs 8' mowers. The expert opinion was to either use a 6' or an 8' mower and skip the 7'. I don't remember who the person was, but he had a lot of mowing experience with all the mowers discussed. He said he had a tractor that could handle both the 6' and 8' OK, but was scary with the 7' mower.

I agree and have heard too many people say that 7' is kind of in a league of its own for my tastes. Maybe we can start the transport thread again with 7' hanging off the back. :confused2: Now I would love one of the double spindle off set 8' mowers.

I see.

Sorry ... I just noticed your RCR2672 in your sig ... What do you think about it? Any regrets? Would you buy it again?

I love it. It is considered a "medium duty" cutter. I don't think Land Pride makes a "Heavy Duty" cutter, but it is beefier than the 18xx "light duty" series.

I have an M8540 and it handles it with ease, but I would have concerns if I had a B sized tractor. A lot of the B size tractors probably have plenty of power to run it, but being able to "man handle" a larger implement takes a bigger tractor.

I was going to get Land Pride's 7' cutter until I did some research on TBN. I still think my M8540 would have handled a 7' OK, but I think I would have had some manuverability issues with it -- because of my property. I actually thought about getting an 8' cutter but common sense in my situation prevailed! (I have tighter spots to get in... and I put my cutter in my garage on a cart I made. An 8' cutter would have been way, way too much to manage. Again, the tractor would have been fine with it... but I couldn't have got it in my garage and mowing the smaller areas would not have been possible.)

One thing I did notice about the 7' mower: it is Cat II. The 6' and smaller are Cat I and Cat II. This is in Land Pride's medium duty series (26xx). I think the 7' in Land Pride's light duty (18xx) series is Cat I and Cat II. My tractor is Cat II, so no issues there. Just thought I would bring it up.

My mower's manual says it weighs 1050 pounds. Haven't put it on a scale so I have to go by that. Some of the dimensions are wrong in the book so I don't know how accurate everything else is.

All in all, it works great. I bent the rear support straps on it the third day I owned it because I took it through a small ditch. This happend because I was using a quick hitch and did not realize that the quick hitch has a very limited top link floating mechanism. I no longer use the quick hitch! Both of my implements are on rolling platforms so the quick hitch doesn't really help. Between my rolling platforms, hydraulic top link and telescoping lift arms... I am good to go!

No regrets on the mower. I'm pretty easy on equipment, but have hit a few hidden logs and landscaping stones. Based on that, I recommend the medium duty over the light duty cutter. Never priced the light duty one so I don't know how much more I spent.

A good buddy of mine has the exact same cutter (RCR2672) on his MX5100... and likes it also. He is the one who turned me on o Kubota and Land Pride in general... and the RCR2672 specifically.

As a side note, I was browsing my manual again the other day. In it I found a section called "Implement Limitations." It goes down the list of a lot of implements and states how big you (the tractor that the manual is for) can go. Very usefull. My eyes were kind of glazed over when I read it the first time, but has a lot more meaning now that I understand a lot more about tractoring. The previous section that referred to the "Implement Limitations" was stating the limits of the 3 point hitch (with and without top link usage) and draw bar.

I'm in FL, & guess I better not waste $ on a 7-footer "experiment" :)
