I bought my son an Olympic weighlifting set last Christmas. If I really wanted to save a few buck I could have just taken a length of iron rebar, stuck the ends in buckets of wet concrete and given him that instead.

The easiest and most effective homemade counter weight I have seen is simple to make and cheap. Take a draw bar---the kind that goes between the lift arms---and a plastic garbage can. Cut some holes for the draw bar to go through the garbage can and fill it with concrete. While the concrete is still wet insert two eyebolts with large washers into the concrete, spacing them so they will except your top link. Depending on the size of garbage can you use you can make varies size weights for under $50 bucks.
