Today after a hard days use pushing snow around the yard I went to put the machine away, well being in low gear from pushing i went to switch into hi. Being on a hill i went to apply the brake to safely change gears when much to my dismay the pedal went to the floor ???????? Long story short i went looking on here for a possible cause. I read this post and I too Hardly Ever use the brake except for when its on a trailer. I have no hills in my yard when i mow. I checked the linkage and Nothing had popped off. The machine had been to the dealer recently to have some loader lines replaced and to adjust the hydro because of a nasty creeping problem; which by the way is better but not gone.
I backed into the garage jacked the rear end up applied the brake and went to spin the rear wheels and zero resistance. I then tryied to adjust the turnbuckle on the right side of the machine. I got some of the free play out of the pedal but again zero resistance when the rear end is in the air and i spin the back tires by hand. Fearing that there was some sort of internal problem I put the turnbuckle back to where it was and let it down, and figured that I would call the dealer on mon When traveling back to the shed with the BX i decided to stop on a small hill and slide the trans into neutral to test the brakes again.
Not expecting anything I let the machine start to go (with my hand on the loader control to stop the thing if i had to I found out that the brakes held????? Is there something I am missing here I am ignorant to this type of braking system but Why do the brakes work when the machine is on the ground but not when the rear end is in the air??
This still does not answer the question about the brake pedal having soo much free play?? Nearest I can figure is that for some reason mabee the dealer adjusted it when trying to fix the creeping problem?? I guess I am not sure if i have a problem now or not I can adjust the turnbuckle back to an acceptable amount of free play but mabee it is just my ignorance of how these brakes operate. If anybody can educate me please chime in
thanks
