No personal experience, but running at half speed? I don't think so.

I wouldn't try it. Running a 540 rpm at 300 rpm would be about the same and that just won't "cut" it.
Plus, the PTO splines will be different. The cost of converting it over to 540 with a new gearbox and PTO shaft (or at least replacing the splined end) would be prohibitive.
However, if the bush hog was extremely cheap and the deck in decent shape then it might make a project.

You can purchase 1000 r.p.m., to 540 r.p.m. adapter sleeves
from a number of retailers so you can run your brush mower.

You can buy adapters or PTO parts and convert it to "work", but it aint gonna mow well at all. Running at half its rated speed will make for some VERY slow mowing in heavier stuff. I am sure you will be dissappointed.
Depends on how cheap it is and how much work you want to do, you could also put a 540RPM gear box on it, but they cost $100-$200 for just a cheap one.
And you didnt mention where you are located, but if it is anything like where I live, Bushhogs sell cheap ALL the time on c-list. I'd check that out and wait till the right one comes along.

I dont know what has gotten into tractor makers to provide only 540. Perhaps its lack of consumer pressure. You are experiencing the cost of this lack. Some bushogs, at least the old ones made back when people did some actual thinking, where designed so that you just interchanged the gears in the transmission gearset to convert from one drive rpm to the other. If this one is set up that way youre good after just a little greasy work.
