JD 850
My father left me a 850 JD, that has minimal hrs. on the meter. He used the tractor for light gardening. I am considering using it to mow a small pasture, and very light brush and weeds. Does anyone have exp. with the 850, and what size bush hog should I purchase? The rear tires are approx. 5' 6" outside to outside. The book says that it is rated at 22.27 hp @ 2600 rpm.

Thanks,

RAM

I used to have a JD750 (21 engine hp) and I ran a 4ft LandPride bush hog with it, which it handled pretty well. The only problem was going up hills, the front end was pretty light so it needed some ballast up front. The JD850 is listed at 24 engine hp, I think the 22.27hp you mentioned is probably at the PTO. I think you would be able to run a 5ft bush hog pretty well with it. If you get into really thick, heavy stuff, and it wants to bog down some you can always take narrower passes. Good luck!

As kebo wrote, go with the 5' rotary cutter.
If you don't have a loader, you'll want suitcase weights up front.

And, Welcome to TBN!!

Thanks for the input. I think that I will go with a 5' unit.

Thanks,
